Tigers: Though pitching coach Chris Bosio said he was fired over a misunderst­anding, The Athletic reported that he directed a racial slur at a clubhouse attendant. Another team employee witnessed the incident, and Bosio was provided an opportunit­y to apologize but declined, the report said. Bosio said the attendant heard him say “monkey” and took offense, but the coach asserted he was referring to pitcher Daniel Stumpf by his nickname, “Spider Monkey.” However, Stumpf said, “Spider Monkey is not a nickname I have been called or I’m familiar with.” The Detroit Free Press said “multiple players and coaches” had never heard Stumpf called “Spider Monkey.”

Nationals: Juan Soto hit two of the Nats’ seven home runs, finishing with four hits and five RBIs in a 17-7 rout of the Phillies. Anthony Rendon, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Brian Goodwin and Mark Reynolds also homered. Rendon added two doubles and three RBIs, and Harper also contribute­d three hits and three RBIs.

Angels: Mike Trout celebrated his return to CF with a home run, and the Angels snapped a sixgame skid by beating the Orioles 7-1. Martin Maldonado also homered, and Andrelton Simmons had four hits. Trout, limited to a DH role for nine games due to a sprained index finger, reached base three times.

Rays: Wilmer Font and four relievers combined on a threehitte­r and the Rays won 3-2 to snap the Astros’ 11-game road winning streak. The Rays improved to 8-6 during a stretch of 16 games against the Astros, Nationals and Yankees.

Brewers: Keon Broxton homered twice and drove in four runs to key an 8-2 victory over the Reds. Chase Anderson pitched two-hit ball for six innings.

Mets: RHP Jacob deGrom was scratched from Friday’s start against the Marlins to tend to a family matter. He’ll pitch Saturday. ... OF Tim Tebow made the Double-AEastern League all-star team. Tebow was hitting .261 with five home runs and 30 RBIs.
