Charles B. Chilcoat, insurance executive

Charles Brooks Chilcoat Jr., a retired insurance executive, golfer and world traveler, died Wednesday in his sleep at Stella Maris Hospice.

The Timonium resident was 96.

He was born and raised on his family’s Sparks farm. He was the son of Charles B. Chilcoat and Dora Miles Chilcoat.

After graduating from Sparks High School in 1939, he received a bachelor’s degree in 1942 from what is now Towson University.

He taught in Baltimore County public schools for several years, then in the late 1940s took a job in sales with Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co.

In 1948, he married Jeanette Wichhart, and in the late 1950s he purchased a property and casualty insurance agency.

The couple owned and operated the Charles B. Chilcoat Jr. Insurance Agency from their Timonium home, selling auto, home and commercial insurance.

Mr. Chilcoat sold the business in 1987 and retired.

He was a member of Loch Raven United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Towson-Timonium. Kiwanis Inter- national had presented him with its lifetime achievemen­t award.

He was also a member of the Canoy Club, a Christian social organizati­on. He and his wife had visited more than 30 countries, and each year arranged a Caribbean vacation for the entire family.

Mr. Chilcoat was an avid golfer, but had to wait until his mid-70s to celebrate hitting a hole-in-one. He enjoyed playing billiards, bridge and 500.

Since 2003, he had lived at Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge senior living community in Timonium. His wife died in 2016. Mr. Chilcoat is survived by a son, Charles B. Chilcoat III of Annapolis; two daughters, Joan Chilcoat Smyth of Cockeysvil­le and Susan Chilcoat Emory of Hunt Valley; a brother, Harry Chilcoat of Stewartsto­wn, Pa.; two sisters, Charlotte Hanna of Hunt Valley and Helen Crosby of Hagerstown; eight grandchild­ren; and three great-granddaugh­ters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Jessops United Methodist Church, 14021 York Road, Sparks.
