All-Star roster crowded with O’s for American League’s 1997 win
JULY 8, 1997: Four Orioles, including outfielder Brady Anderson (two hits), second baseman Roberto Alomar (five assists) and third baseman Cal Ripken Jr. (single and three stellar fielding plays), help the American League to a 3-1 All-Star Game win in Cleveland. Randy Myers pitches a perfect eighth inning.
JULY 12, 1982: Paul Blair, 38, former Orioles All-Star and Gold Glove center fielder, is named baseball coach at Fordham. He’ll serve one year and later coach at Coppin State.
JULY 10, 1968: First base coach Earl Weaver replaces Hank Bauer as manager of the Orioles (43-37). “I think I inherited a good ballclub. With one or two changes, I think it can be improved,” says Weaver, whose teams in the Orioles’ farm system won three pennants.
JULY 9, 1963: Johnny Unitas stops by the Colts’ rookie orientation at McDonogh to pick up his football shoes and ends up taking part in the drills. “At least I won’t have to run on my own today,” the Pro Bowl quarterback says.
JULY 9, 1960: Navy’s eight-man varsity crew wins the Olympic rowing trials in Syracuse, N.Y., edging favored California by one length and earning a trip to the Summer Games in Rome under first-year coach Lou Lindsey.
JULY 9, 1944: It’s a hard-fought 3-2 victory for the International League Orioles over the Giants at Jersey City. In the eighth inning, having been ejected for arguing a call, Stan Benjamin and Frank Skaff are doused with a fan’s drink. Both charge into the stands, and several spectators are spiked during the altercation.
JULY 11, 1936: Johnny Hoffman of Baltimore Country Club scores an ace on the ninth hole at Five Farms on a drive that lands in the cup on the fly.
JULY 14, 1929: Laymon “Corner Pocket” Yokely pitches the Baltimore Black Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Hilldale Club from Philadelphia in an American Negro League game at Maryland Baseball Park at Bush and Russell streets. Yokely will win17 games and lead the Black Sox to the pennant.

JULY 14, 1948: Earl Williams, Orioles catcher acquired from Atlanta in November 1972 for, among others, All-Star pitcher Pat Dobson and second baseman Davey Johnson. After two disappointing years, he is returned to the Braves for a minor leaguer. Williams died of leukemia in 2013.
