Frederick’s Cole captures Maryland State Open

-

The 97th Maryland State Open proved to be a young man’s game Wednesday, as four players between the ages of 20 and 23 ended in a tie at par-210 for the regulation 54-hole event at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown. Frederick County resident Ryan Cole, a second-year pro, who had gone from two strokes behind to a tie on the final hole, then won the playoff with a birdie on the third extra hole (10-18-10), beating second-round leader Jimmy Grem, a pro from Eagle’s Nest CC, who missed a birdie when his downhill putt slid by the cup. Evan Katz, from Bethesda CC, won the Harry Pitt Bowl as the low amateur at 210. Lee Detmer, from Chevy Chase Club, finished third, bowing out of the playoff at the first extra hole.
