Mussina’s one-hitter lifts O’s over Rangers

JULY17,1992: MikeMussin­a, 23, pitches a one-hitter as the Orioles defeat the Rangers, 8-0, in Texas. It’s the 27th straight time that Mussina (10-3) has pitched into the sixth inning or later.

JULY 18, 1982: “I didn’t think they were overly enthusiast­ic out there,” new Colts coach Frank Kush says after the team’s first practice, a 2½- hour workout in near 100-degree heat at Goucher.

JULY 21, 1979: Before an announced 51,381 on Team Jersey Night at Memorial Stadium, the first-place Orioles rout the California Angels, 10-2, as right-hander Sammy Stewart, 24, outduels Nolan Ryan.

JULY 15, 1971: Having dispatched Jim Maldeis for the men’s title in The Evening Sun Municipal Tennis Tournament at Clifton Park, Bill Tontz teams with Maldeis to win the doubles championsh­ip, 6-2, 6-4, over Ray Bender and Jim Cummings.

JULY20,1967: In the Orioles’ fifth annual Father-Son Game at Memorial Stadium, Brooks Robinson’s sons, David (6) and Chris (4), pull off a double steal, and Frank Kevin Robinson (4½) performs a fall-away slide that would have made his father, Frank, proud — except that he lands 4 yards short of second base.

JULY 21, 1958: The Johns Hopkins lacrosse team wins its seventh game in an eight-game tour of England, defeating the Kenton Lacrosse Club, champion of southern England, 13-7, in London. Billy Morrill (two goals, one assist) leads the Blue Jays, 1957 USILA champions.

JULY19, 1948: Seen off by 200 fans and a marching band, the Colts of the AllAmerica Football Conference leave Camden Station for training camp in Sun Valley, Idaho. Their best receiver, Lamar “Racehorse” Davis, misses the train and has to take another.

JULY 16, 1936: Eddie Fisher, knucklebal­ling reliever who, acquired from the Chicago White Sox in June 1966, goes 5-3 with 14 saves and a 2.64 ERA to help the Orioles win a world championsh­ip.
