In Finland, President Trump self-abases

- Sig Seidenman, Owings Mills

You can't really blame President Donald Trump. He is simply a narcissistic naïf who hasn't the vaguest idea of what it means to be president of the United States. Nor does this present a problem for him. His every word and action has but one focus, not the good of the nation, or our allies, or the world in general, but simply his own self-aggrandizement. He is the center of his universe and whatever the issue, he sees it only as it relates to himself (“Trump’s ‘America First’ morphs into ‘Me First,’” July 17).

The blame rests with the people who voted, for whatever reason, for this totally inappropriate individual to occupy the highest office in our land. I'm assuming that most were well-intentioned, but clearly, they made a mistake.

But here he is, and here he will probably be until 2020, unless by some miracle, Bob Mueller finds a way to do the world a favor and get rid of him. But where is the Republican Party? Normally, a hawkish bunch who wouldn't be caught dead saying anything complimentary about the thuggish Vladimir Putin. Silence is their response as our president continues to fawn over him.

George Will, the erudite conservative columnist of long standing who has renounced his membership in the Republican Party, called the GOP’s elected representatives, "invertebrates." It was Mr. Trump who drove him from his longtime party, or to be more precise, who drove the party from him. He finds their behavior appalling. Are they still, at long last, too cowardly to speak out in the service of our country?

America was founded by men who dared to put their very lives on the line. They would look upon our current Congress with disgust. Perhaps this embarrassing self-abasement of Mr. Trump during this recent fiasco in Finland will finally give some the modicum of courage to finally object to what is a travesty of leadership.

Whatever your politics, it is hard to imagine any patriotic American finding comfort in Mr. Trump's obsequious behavior in Finland. Its time to tell the emperor that he has no clothes.
