Damascus’ Furgeson named state’s top wrestling coach

Damascus coach John Furgeson has been named National Wrestling Coaches Associatio­n Head Coach of the Year for the state of Maryland. Furgeson led Damascus to an unbeaten season and a Class 2A state dual meet championsh­ip. Nine of his wrestlers qualified for the state tournament and two won championsh­ips. NHL: The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Madison Bowey to a two-year contract. Bowey’s contract will carry an average annual value of $1 million. Bowey, 23, made his NHL debut Oct. 14 against the Philadelph­ia Flyers and recorded his first point Oct. 26, against the Vancouver Canucks. In 51 games during the 2017-18 season, Bowey had12 assists, tied for ninth among rookie defensemen. —

Brittany Lincicome shot a 6-over 78 in the first round of the PGA Barbasol Championsh­ip in Nicholasvi­lle, Ky., leaving the LPGA Tour pro’s goal of making the cut likely out of reach. Lincicome was hoping to become the second woman to make the cut in a men’s event and the first since Babe Zaharias in 1945. She’s the first woman to get a PGA Tour start since Michelle Wie a decade ago. Troy Merritt surged to the first-round lead with a course-record tying 10-under 62. ...
