John G. Evans, investment banker

John Garrettson Evans, a retired investment banker and tennis player, died of cancer Sunday at the Mercy Ridge Retirement Community. The former Ruxton resident was 83.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Longwood Road, he was the son of Henry C. Evans, a banker and a U.S. Army general who served in World Wars I and II, and Eleanor O’Donovan. He was a 1953 graduate of Loyola High School at Blakefield, where he was named the most valuable player on the school’s ice hockey team. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He tried out for the U.S. Olympic ice hockey team and was named to All American status for lacrosse at West Point.

He served in the Army infantry and left the military as a captain. He also was a past Maryland National Guard member.

Mr. Evans joined the old Equitable Trust Co. and was an investment banker.

He played lacrosse at the Maryland Lacrosse Club. He was a five-day-a-week tennis player and competed at the Roland Run Club, Orchard Tennis Club and Home- land Club. He played until he was 82.

He was a past president of the USO of Maryland, Roland Run Club, Four Winds Associatio­n and the Sandpiper Dunes Associatio­n in Ocean City. He was also a Maryland Historical Society trustee and secretary and a past chair of the Military Academy’s class of 1958 Endowment Fund.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier, 13717 Cuba Road in Hunt Valley.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hoy Muth Albert; a son, Michael F. Evans of Hunt Valley; three daughters, Rose Irvin of Ruxton, Emily Shattuck of Luthervill­e and Eleanor Flores of San Diego; a stepson, Phil Muth of Montgomery County; a stepdaught­er, Anne Bennett of Sullivan’s Island, S.C.; and eight grandchild­ren. Mr. Evans’ first wife of 53 years, Rosalyn Schilpp, died in 2016. A son, Timothy O'Donovan Evans, died in 2006. Another son, John G. Evans Jr., died in 2011.
