St. Frances’ Reese trims recruiting list
6-foot-3 All-Metro forward considering 10 schools, including Maryland
St. Frances All-Metro forward Angel Reese trimmed her college basketball recruiting list to 10 programs Friday, announcing her top 10 on Twitter.
One of the nation’s top recruits in the Class of 2020, Reese is considering Baylor, Louisville, Maryland, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA and Virginia. She whittled that list down from nearly three dozen offers from top Division I programs.
Reese, a versatile 6-foot-3 player whose goal is to play in the WNBA, wants to compete for a program in a Power 5 Conference, but she said she also looked at schools strong in her intended major, kinesiology and sports medicine. Then, she considered a number of other factors.
“For coaching style, all the schools play fast paced. Anybody can bring the ball down. It doesn’t matter about position,” she said.
“I had other places like UConn and Notre Dame, but I’m looking for somewhere I can play my freshman year and get the most out of my four years. That was a big thing for me also and playing for a coach who can get me to the next level.”
She’s also looking for a comfort level with the coach and the program.
“Other than basketball, I like a coach that can take me in as a family,” Reese said. “Most of the schools are far away, so I kind of have to feel like I’m part of the family. When I break it down with these 10 schools, I’m looking for family, the coaching style. I’ll be watching a lot of games this year. I’ll be going to practices and things like that.”
Reese has unofficially visited Maryland, Louisville and South Carolina, and she’s also been to Virginia, but she plans to take TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS visits to all the schools.
She said there have been a few schools who have offered her recently and she might add to her list, although she doesn’t plan to make that public. She will cut the list to five, but she doesn’t know when.
Reese doesn’t know when she will commit. She has said she’d like to make her final decision by September of her senior year, but after watching a number of older teammates from her Amateur Athletic Union team commit earlier this summer, she said she might commit earlier, too. She plans to sign in November 2019.
A four-star recruit who made it to the final cut for the U.S. under-17 national team in June, Reese is a versatile player. Her athleticism and agility allow her to dominate the post for St. Frances and play small forward for her AAU team, Team Takeover. She tried out for the U.S. team as wing.
HoopGurlz rates Reese the No. 18 player overall and the No. 2 wing in the Class of 2020.
A two-time first-team All-Metro selection, she averaged 17.6 points and 12.1 rebounds as well as 3.1 assists last season for No. 1 St. Frances, the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion.
Her Team Takeover finished 48-2 this summer and was one of the top teams in the nation on the Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball League circuit.
