AUG. 15, 1993: New York defeats the Orioles, 1-0, at Yankee Stadium on a home run by Don Mattingly. The ball is caught by a 16-year-old fan who leans over the right-field fence just as Orioles outfielder Mark McLemore leaps for it.

AUG. 18, 1988: Vicky Bullett, Maryland’s star basketball forward, earns a berth on the U.S. Olympic team for the upcoming Summer Games. A 6-foot-3 senior, Bullett will contribute four points and three rebounds in the gold medal-winning game against Yugoslavia.

AUG. 13, 1976: Former Colts tackle Bob Vogel, 34, surprises a burglar at his home in Havre de Grace at 1:30 a.m. Vogel hangs on despite being beaten with a crowbar and needs 30 stitches to close his wounds.

AUG. 14, 1964: Before an announced record baseball crowd (47,424) at Memorial Stadium, the first-place Orioles defeat the New York Yankees, 5-4. A three-run home run by Brooks Robinson helps Baltimore to its 29th win in 37 one-run games.

AUG. 12, 1960: Johnny Unitas throws three touchdown passes to Lenny Moore, and Steve Myhra kicks three field goals as the NFL champion Colts defeat the College All-Stars, 32-7, before an announced 70,000 at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

AUG. 16, 1958: Marion “Ace” Canupp of Millersville wins the feature sportsmanmodified stock car race at Westport Stadium, taking the lead near the end of the 25-lap event. Canupp will be inducted into the Maryland Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame.

AUG. 12, 1927: Despite a two-run home run by Babe Ruth, the International League Orioles defeat the New York Yankees, 8-7, in an exhibition before more than 6,500 fans at Oriole Park. Baltimore wins it by scoring four runs in the ninth, all off Ruth, who pitched that inning.

AUG. 16, 1941: Gene Brabender, strongarmed Orioles pitcher (1966-1968) whowas known to bend metal spikes with his bare hands. Brabender died in 1996.
