Terps football players earn Big Ten honors

Junior defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. and freshman wide receiver Jeshaun Jones were recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their play in Maryland’s 34-29 win over No. 23 Texas on Saturday. Brooks was named Big Ten CoDefensiv­e Player of the Week, while Jones won Co-Freshman of the Week. Brooks led the Terps with11 tackles and made the game-sealing intercepti­on with 1:04 remaining. Jones’ debut included a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown, all in the first half of his first college game. The last freshman to record those three things in the same game was Marcus Mariota (2012). The Terps return to action Saturday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Bowling Green. NAVY FOOTBALL: Navy senior wide receiverqu­arterback Zach Abey (Archbishop Spalding) tied an NCAA record on Saturday at Hawaii by scoring a rushing touchdown on three-consecutiv­e carries. Abey, who had touchdown runs of 3 (as a quarterbac­k), 1 (as a quarterbac­k) and 7 (as a wide receiver) yards on consecutiv­e carries, is just the the seventh player in FBS history to accomplish the feat and the second Navy player. Chris McCoy scored on runs of 2, 9 and 2 yards on consecutiv­e carries against Rutgers in 1997. MEN’S SOCCER: Navy played to a 1-1 draw against College of Charleston on Sunday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Freshman Jacob Williams (Old Mill) scored his first collegiate goal in the 71st minute for the Midshipmen (0-3-1) to force the match into overtime against the Cougars (1-2-1). WOMEN’S SOCCER: Hannah Hoefs scored twice in the first 31 minutes and host Loyola Maryland (2-3) earned a 2-1 win over UMBC (0-5) at Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday. The Greyhounds had an18-3 advantage in shots. Hoefs (Linganore) was named the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Monday. WOMEN’SVOLLEYBAL­L: Katie Forsythe was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, earning the honor for the second week in a row, after leading Loyola Maryland and the conference in digs. The freshman from Perry, Ohio, finished Loyola’s three matches at the Maverick Classic with 68 digs, an average of 6.18 per set. She had 21 or more in all three of the contests and was one of two Loyola players ( Ann Ernst) to be named to the All-Tournament team.

Nick Saban announced that sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa will start for Alabama against Arkansas State on Saturday. Tagovailoa started the top-ranked Crimson Tide’s 51-14 season- opening victory over Louisville last weekend. He threw for two TDs and ran for another and led Alabama on five TD drives over his six possession­s. Saban said junior and former starter Jalen Hurts, who also played against Louisville but failed to lead the offense on any TD drives over his four possession­s, still will play a role. ... Ohio State coach Urban Meyer met with his assistants and will run practice Tuesday in his first official duties since being suspended last month for his mismanagem­ent of now-fired assistant Zach Smith, who was accused of domestic violence and other troubling behavior. But under terms of the ban, Meyer can’t conduct practice or meet with assistants for the 24-hour period ahead of the next two games. Meyer can return full-time for the Buckeyes’ home game against Tulane on Sept. 22. ... Illinois senior WR Mike Dudek suffered a season-ending left knee injury during the Illini’s 31-24 victory over Kent State on Saturday. It was the third major knee injury for Dudek, who earned freshman All-America honors in 2014 when he played his only full season. He missed the 2015 and 2016 seasons and played in seven games last year. ... Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said DE Jonathan Greenard will be out indefinite­ly after suffering a wrist injury during the Cardinals’ loss to Alabama on Saturday. ... The Big Ten Network announced that analyst Braylon Edwards was suspended indefinite­ly for violating the network’s social media guidelines. Edwards, a former All-America WR at Michigan, tweeted, then deleted, harsh criticism of the Wolverines on Saturday night after they lost 24-17 to Notre Dame. He criticized OL Cesar Ruiz, calling him “weak,” and said QB Shea Patterson is “scared.” Edwards went on to tweet, “(expletive) Michigan offense so predictabl­e ... Michigan football is sadly one thing ... Trash.”

The NCAA will be back in court Tuesday in California, defending its amateurism rules against plaintiffs who say capping compensati­on at the value of a scholarshi­p violates federal antitrust law. The claim against the NCAA and the 11 conference­s that have participat­ed at the highest level of college football was originally brought by former West Virginia football player Shawne Alston and later merged with similar lawsuits, including a notable case brought by former Clemson football player Martin Jenkins.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Luke Modric and Mohamed Salah were named finalists for the FIFA world player of the year award. Modric and Salah made the final list for the first times in their careers. Lionel Messi failed to make the list for the first time since 2006. He and Ronaldo are the only winners of the award since 2008. ... Former Brazil great Ronaldo took over as the majority stakeholde­r in recently promoted La Liga club Valladolid. Ronaldo owns 51 percent of the club’s shares. He will preside over the board of directors, while Carlos Suarez will remain club president. Valladolid is playing in Spain’s top division for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
