Indians: Josh Donaldson was activated from the disabled list and made his Indians debut at Tampa Bay. Donaldson was acquired from the Blue Jays on Aug. 31. The 2015 AL MVP had not played in the majors since May 28 because of a left calf strain. Jose Ramirez moved from third to second to make room in the field for Donaldson. Jason Kipnis was moved from second to center field. ... The team also said 18-game winner Corey Kluber will not start this weekend, allowing him to get extra days off and to line him up for the postseason. “Barring anything crazy, he can go into a playoff game with one extra day’s rest,” manager Terry Francona said.

Red Sox: Chris Sale pitched a scoreless inning in his first start since going on the DL with shoulder inflammation. Sale allowed a hit, struck out two and hit a batter. Manager Alex Cora said Sale, who hadn’t pitched since Aug. 12, would have a maximum pitch count of 40. He threw 26 pitches before Brandon Workman took over for the second inning.

Nationals: Spencer Kieboom appeared to spit out a tooth before he hit his first big-league homer in the fifth inning as the Nationals beat the fading Phillies 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. He pointed to a gap in his teeth as he jogged back to the dugout. Kieboom is waiting on veneers and lost half a temporary tooth at breakfast when he bit into a baguette. The other half was stuck in his gums. “The (Washington Capitals), those boys play with no teeth,” he said. “I can play with no teeth.”

Blue Jays: OF Randal Grichuk is back in the lineup two days after he crashed face-first into a metal chair. Grichuk started in right field and batted fifth. He was injured when he slid while catching a foul ball. A guard seated near the stands didn’t see Grichuk coming and was holding a metal stool when the accident occurred. Concussion tests were negative. Grichuk was left with a bloody nose, swollen left eye socket and a few facial cuts.
