Archbishop Spalding and Bishop Moore, from Orlando, Fla., might want to stop scheduling football games.

Last year’s game had to be canceled because Hurricane Irma kept the Hornets in Florida. Now, there’s a chance they might not make it to Friday’s game because of Hurricane Florence’s effect on Maryland.

Spalding coach Kyle Schmitt said both schools will wait as long as they can to make a decision. If the game is canceled, it will be the third straight week the Cavaliers come away with no decision. Their season opener with Good Counsel, a 35-35 tie ended by lightning in the final three minutes, was considered no game by the Falcons. Last week’s game with Benedictine (Va.) was canceled because of storms.

“I’ve unfortunately become a bit of a weather expert here in the last three weeks,” Schmitt said Tuesday morning. “There’s a legit possibility this is going to be nothing more than a rain event in the Baltimore area. It seems to be trending that way, but we have no idea. Last year, it was going to be a direct hit on Orlando. If we were in the Carolinas right now, this thing would have been canceled by Sunday. I don’t want to downgrade the threat of this but at the same time if we can get them up here and play a game, we’d love to and we’re looking at every option but ultimately their kids’ safety and our kids’ safety is the No. 1 concern.”

While the rain has disrupted the majority of games for the past two weekends, most have managed to finish, in some cases taking three days to do so. The No. 2 Cavaliers are the only team in The Baltimore Sun’s Top 15 yet to complete a game.

“I feels like we’re canceling Christmas when you’ve got to tell these kids we’re not playing. That’s the look on their faces. I want the kids to understand that we’re going to play all of our regular opponents throughout October and there’s some things in the works for early November. I think it’s important for our kids to get 10 games in.” Games already being shifted: In anticipation of Hurricane Florence’s aftermath, Bel Air has moved its home game against John Carroll from Saturday to Friday at 7 p.m. Hammond will play at Marriotts Ridge on Friday at 4 p.m. Several games have been moved from Friday to Thursday: Woodlawn at New Town, 4; Milford Mill at Randallstown, 4 p.m.; Lewis at Fort Hill, 5; Dunalk at Lansdowne, 5; Patterson Mill at F.S. Key, 6; and Patapsco at Perry Hall, 6:30.
