Orioles outlast Indians, advance to ALCS despite record 23 Ks
OCT. 5, 1996: Despite 23 strikeouts — a major league record for most whiffs in a victory — the Orioles defeat the Indians, 4-3, in 12 innings in Cleveland to advance to the American League Championship Series. Three players — Rafael Palmeiro, Bobby Bonilla and Pete Incaviglia — strike out four times each.
OCT. 5, 1993: Centennial’s 36-game boys soccer winning streak ends with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Walt Whitman, No. 1 in the Washington area. Brian West scores for the Eagles, defending state Class 3A champions who play without three starters suspended for breaking a school rule.
OCT. 6, 1979: “My guys know how to pitch, hit three-run homers and catch the ball,” manager Earl Weaver says as the Orioles advance to World Series with an 8-0 rout of the California Angels in Game 4 of the best-of-five American League Championship Series in Anaheim. Scott McGregor pitches a six-hitter, designated hitter Pat Kelly homers with two men on and Doug DeCinces stars with his glove at third base.
OCT. 5, 1968: “One loss in 103 years isn’t so bad,” coach Carl Runk says after Towson State drops its inaugural football game, 39-8, at Frostburg State. Frank Martin passes 30 yards to Scotty Santora for the Tigers’ lone score.
OCT. 2, 1968: A tip-in basket at the buzzer by rookie Wes Unseld gives the Baltimore Bullets a 111-110 exhibition victory over the Chicago Bulls in Hammond, Ind. Unseld (27 points, 12 rebounds) will be both the NBA Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player that season.
OCT. 3, 1964: A 7-6 walk-off win in the 10th inning over the Detroit Tigers ends the Orioles’ season with a club-record 97 victories. Dick Hall pitches three shutout innings in relief for the victory, extending Orioles manager Davey Johnson reacts to the Orioles’ 4-3, 12-inning victory over the Indians in Game 4 of the best-of-five American League Division Series in 1996. his scoreless string to 25 1/3 consecutive innings.
SEPT. 30, 1956: Quarterback George Shaw sparkles in the Colts’ opener, a 28-21 upset of the Chicago Bears before an announced 45,221 at Memorial Stadium. Shawcompletes19 of 25 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns, and fullback Alan “The Horse” Ameche rushes for two scores.
OCT. 5, 1912: Navy edges Johns Hopkins, 7-3, in football at Annapolis as K.P. Gilchrist scores on a 1-yard run late in the game. George Gillet kicks a 25-yard field goal for Hopkins, whose lineup includes seven freshmen.
