Girl, 7, struck and killed by van near her school

A 7-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a work van near her school in Essex, according to Baltimore County police.The accident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. across the street from Sandalwood Elementary School, on the 900 block of S. Marlyn Ave. The driver remained at the scene. Police said the girl, a second-grader, was standing on the sidewalk near the driveway entry to a residentia­l community while her brothers were standing on the other side of the driveway. The girl ran in front of a white work van as it entered a driveway. The first officer who arrived began performing CPR on the child, who was then rushed to Franklin Square Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. “I am heartbroke­n to learn that one of our precious students passed away this afternoon after being hit by a vehicle near Sandalwood Elementary,” Interim School Superinten­dent Verletta White said in a tweet. Baltimore County Schools tweeted that the school system’s traumatic loss team will be at Sandalwood today to support staff, and Monday to support students and staff. County schools are closed today for profession­al developmen­t. Towanda Avenue and Oswego Avenue in Northwest Baltimore to investigat­e the discovery of an adult man found dead in the area. Detectives suspect foul play and are awaiting the results of an autopsy. A 26-year-old man shot Wednesday in the 2600 block of Saint Benedict St. in West Baltimore died from his injuries. Police identified him as Travon Reid.
