Eagles top Cavs in field hockey
Atholton cruises to Howard County girls volleyball title; Loyola soccer moves to 15-0
Tuesday’s field hockey game between No. 2 Archbishop Spalding and No. 10 McDonogh had a lot more at stake than just going into the playoffs on a high note.
A win for the Cavaliers would have meant sole possession of second place, assuring home field advantage throughout the playoffs and avoiding No. 1Notre DamePrep until a potential meeting in the conference final. A win by the Eagles wouldn’t quite do the same for them, at least not right away.
After falling behind by two goals at halftime, visiting McDonogh (8-2 overall, 6-2 A Conference) scored a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to tie the game, then scored the go-ahead goal seven minutes later and held on for a 3-2 victory.
The victory for the Eagles ties them with the Cavaliers and Garrison Forest with 6-2 records in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference. A set of tiebreakers will have to be used to determine who gets the No. 2 seed for the playoffs, which begin later this week.
MARYVALE 4, ST. PAUL’S 1: Emma Radebaugh scored twice and Olivia Cerasoli had two assists to lead the host Lions (8-7, 4-4 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) past the Crusaders (4-7, 3-5).
SEVERN 2, ST. MARY’S 1: Ally Dixon scored twice to lead the Admirals (10-4, 8-3 IAAM B Conference) past the Saints (10-3-1, 8-2-1).

NO. 1 LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD 4, JOHN CARROLL 0: Chase Llewellyn had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Dons (15-0, 14-0 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) past the Patriots (3-14-1, 1-12-1). Loyola hosts No. 9 Gilman on Thursday to conclude regular-season play.
NO. 9 GILMAN 1, ST. PAUL’S 0: Johnny Melacon scored the second-half gamewinner to lift the visiting Greyhounds (13-4-2, 10-3-2 MIAA AConference) past the Crusaders (3-11-2, 2-11-2).
SEVERN 4, PARK 2: Colin McCarthy and Nathan Gauthier each scored two goals to lead the host Admirals (13-4, 12-2 MIAA B Conference) past the Bruins (7-6-4, 6-5-3).

ST. PAUL’S 2, GLENELG COUNTRY 1: Laney Cornelius and Lizzy Pirisino each scored to lead the visiting Gators (9-4, 4-3 IAAM A Conference) past the Dragons (4-10, 1-7). Brianna Chun made 20 saves for Glenelg.
Girls volleyball
NO. 1 ATHOLTON 3, CENTENNIAL 0: The host Raiders (13-0, 10-0 Howard) won in straight sets — 25-23, 25-13, 25-20 — to clinch at least a share of their second straight league title, but the manner in which they have dominated Howard County opponents has become a rallying call for the players. They have been perfect in the league so far by winning each of their 10 county matches, 3-0. That’s 30 set victories in 30 played.
ST. PAUL’S 3, MCDONOGH 0: Shelby Lucas had 13 kills and Abbey Snyder with 30 assists to lead the Gators (14-3) past the Eagles (2-16) in an IAAM A Conference quarterfinal. St. Paul’s won, 25-20, 25-18, 25-11.
GLENELG COUNTRY 3, CONCORDIA PREP1: Joy Hursey and Sydni Williams each had12 kills to lead the host Dragons (7-5) past the Saints (4-13) in an IAAM C Conference quarterfinal. Glenelg Country won, 23-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-13.
