These are four of the younger candidates running for office this year: Age: 27 Party: Democrat Running for: One of two seats on the Wicomico County Council at Large against Republican­s Julie Brewington and John Cannon and Democrat William McCain Fun fact: Studied music technology at Bowie State University Reason for running: “Politics affects every aspect of our lives. If we don’t like something, we have to stand up and be a part of the fight to change it. It’s our generation’s turn.” Age: 25 Party: Republican Running for: One of the three open seats for Allegany County commission­er with Republican­s Creade Brodie Jr. and Dave Caporale and Democrat Darrell Lee Powell Fun fact: The youngest candidate to run and win a general election contest in 2014 at age 21 Reason for running: “County commission­er is not the highest-profile job, but it’s a very important job. We get to do such great things. The downside [of being young] is you’re held to a higher standard. You really have to prove yourself.” Age: 26 Party: Green Running for: One of two seats open for the House of Delegates, District 2A, against Republican­s Neil Parrott and William Wivell of Washington County Fun fact: Teaches philosophy and biology at Frederick Community College Reason for running: “In part, I decided to run because I saw there was no opposition to the Republican candidates in my district. If we’re really going to be living in a democratic society, all candidates need to have opposition.” Age: 25 Party: Republican Running for: One of two seats for House of Delegates, District 30A, against Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch, an Anne Arundel County Democrat, Democrat Alice Cain of Anne Arundel and Bob O’Shea, a Republican Fun fact: Worked as a former legislativ­e aide for Republican Neil Parrott of Washington County Reason for running: “I’m running just to be here for my county and also to represent people our age and women like me. When I get elected, we’re all going to have to work together, that’s the only way we can solve real problems.”
