Gonzaga fends off Duke for Maui title

Duke’s Maui mastery is over. Gonzaga blocked the Blue Devils out of another title.

Rui Hachimura scored 20 points and No. 3 Gonzaga blocked four shots in the final 46 seconds to hold off five-time champion Duke 89-87 on Wednesday in the Maui Invitation­al title game.

Duke (5-1) trailed by 16 in the second half before mounting a massive charge. After the Blue Devils tied it 87-87, Hachimura scored on a hard drive to put Gonzaga up.

The Bulldogs ( 6- 0) missed four free throws to give Duke a final shot, but Brandon Clarke blocked R.J. Barrett’s drive on the final play.

Gonzaga beat a No. 1 team for the first time and ended Duke’s 17-game unbeaten streak on the Valley Isle with its second Maui Invitation­al title.

Barrett had 23 points and Zion Williamson scored 22 for Duke.

Zach Norvell Jr. scored 18 points for the Bulldogs. PJ Washington had 19 points and 11 rebounds and No. 10 Kentucky (4-1) shot 56 percent to run away from visiting Winthrop 87-74.

Tyler Herro scored 15 points for the Wildcats (4-1), who controlled the boards 37-20 and had a 42-24 advantage on scoring in the paint. Keldon Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds as Kentucky won its fourth in a row.

North Carolina PG Seventh Woods will miss this week’s two games in Las Vegas after suffering a concussion in practice Tuesday. ... Grant Williams scored 24 points and No. 5 Tennessee (4-0) put five players in double figures to beat Louisville 92-81 in the first semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. ... Ethan Happ had 16 points and 12 rebounds and No. 25 Wisconsin (4-) beat Stanford 62-46 in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. ... Xavier Johnson hit the go-ahead layup with 1:19 left as Pittsburgh (6-0) beat St. Louis 75-73 at the Barclays Center Classic in New York.
