Mount Union to host JHU in DIII football semifinals

No. 1 ranked Mount Union will host No. 13 Johns Hopkins in the national semifinals of the NCAA Division III football playoffs Saturday at noon at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio. The Purple Raiders (13-0) have advanced to the Stagg Bowl 20 times since 1993 with a record 13 national championsh­ips. The Blue Jays (12-1) are making their 10th playoff appearance with a 9-9 record in postseason games. This will be the third meeting between between the schools. ESPN will be broadcast live on ESPN3, its digital platform, and the ESPN mobile app. The winner advances to the national championsh­ip game — the Stagg Bowl — against either No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor or No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at Woodforest Stadium in Shenandoah, Texas. HARNESS RACING: Western Fame, with Maryland native Corey Callahan in the sulky, went by 7-5 favorite Filibuster Hanover down the stretch to win the $100,000 Potomac Pace at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington on Sunday. Western Fame, a recent acquisitio­n by trainer Rene Allard, who trained last year’s Potomac Pace winner Keystone Velocity, covered the mile in 1:49 2/5. The victory, the 16th of Western Fame’s career, pushed his career earnings over the $1 million mark. ... Foiled Again, the richest horse in harness racing history, chalked up win No. 107 earlier in the evening when he won the appropriat­ely titled $15,000 Foiled Again Invitation­al. ... Slick Tony, the 4-5 favorite, came four-wide into the stretch with driver Montrell Teague to win the $25,000 Maryland Invitation­al for horses owned, sired or bred in Maryland. Sams Triple Crown was second and pacesetter All The Cookies was third.
