Wilde Lake grad Corbett lifts UMBC to lacrosse win

Grayson Corbett (Wilde Lake) scored the unassisted game-winner with 1:56 left in overtime to lift visiting UMBC(1-0) to a 9-8 decision over American (0-1) in women’s lacrosse on Wednesday. The Eagles led 8-5 with 13:37 left to play before UMBC went on a 3-0 run over the final 10½ minutes of regulation. Brittany Levine scored the tying goal on a freepositi­on shot as time expired. ... Logan Brennan had a career-high five goals and an assist to lead No. 9 James Madison (1-1) to a 14-8 victory over No 12 Virginia Tech. The visiting Dukes scored seven goals per half and their defense held the Hokies scoreless for over 11 minutes. ... Charlotte North had five goals and six assists, a single-game points record for the school, and No. 16 Duke (2-0) won a 20-0 shutout over Presbyteri­an (0-2). Duke goalies Gabbe Cadoux (McDonogh) got the win with one save, and Jamie Lockwood had two saves. WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Kyaja Williams and Shawnkia McCallum combined for 21 points to help Bowie State (19-4) avenge an earlier loss to Virginia Union, defeating the Panthers 58-46. ... Visiting Washington College got a career-high 16 points from senior forward Emily Thiemann in a 77-45 win over Bryn Mawr.

HORSE RACING: Breeze Easy’s Grade 3 winner Late Night Pow Wow, her streak having grown to eight races since the only loss of her career 10 months ago, will face the toughest test yet in her return to graded-stakes competitio­n for Saturday’s $250,000 Barbara Fritchie (G3) at Laurel Park. The 67th running of the Barbara Fritchie for fillies and mares 4 and older and the 43rd renewal of the $250,000 General George (G3) for 4-year-olds and up, both at 7 furlongs, co-headline a 10-race Winter Carnival program that features five stakes worth $800,000 in purses. A trio of $100,000 stakes are also on tap: the 1-mile Miracle Wood presented by Blackwell Real Estate for 3-year-olds, the Wide Country at about 11⁄ miles for 3-year-old fillies, and the 11⁄ mile John B. Campbell presented by Fidelity First for 4-year-olds and up. First-race post time is 12:30 p.m. In addition to live racing, Saturday’s program will include ice sculptures, an ice-carving demonstrat­ion, an ice wall with $3,000 in prizes and a Tech Glove giveaway with program purchase, while supplies last.

BOXING: The Washington Golden Gloves Championsh­ip Tournament will hold the first in a series of seven nights of boxing Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Rosecroft Raceway. — NFL: The Ravens will trade veteran QB Joe Flacco to the Broncos in exchange for a fourthroun­d pick in this year’s draft, according to reports. The deal can’t officially be processed until the new league year begins March 13. Flacco, 34, has played his entire 11-year career with the Ravens, serving as the team’s starter since the first game of his rookie season until he lost the job to former Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson last season. Flacco, who has a career 84.1 QB rating with 38,245 passing yards, 212 TDs and 136 INTs, was the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII. ... The Jaguars re-signed K Josh Lambo to a four-year contract extension. Lambo, 28, converted a team-record 24 straight field goals from Nov. 19, 2017 to Nov. 11, 2018.

SOCCER: Son Heung-min, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente each had second-half goals to lead English Premier League club Tottenham to a 3-0 victory over Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of a last-16 Champions League match in London. The second leg is March 5. In other last-16 action, substitute Marco Asensio scored in the 87th minute to lift La Liga club and defending Champions League champ Real Madrid to a 2-1 first-leg victory over Dutch club Ajax in Amsterdam. TENNIS: Three-time Grand Slam champ Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerlan­d beat No. 5 seed Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance to the quarterfin­al round of the Rotterdam Open in the Netherland­s. In a first-round upset, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovin­a beat No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
