Loyola Md. men claim top national ranking

The Loyola Maryland men’s lacrosse team moved up to No. 1 in the nation in all three polls, garnering the top spot in the United States Intercolle­giate Lacrosse Associatio­n Coaches poll and the Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine media rankings. The Greyhounds earned their second win of the season Saturday with an 18-12 defeat of then-No. 15 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field. Loyola opened the year with a 17-9 victory over then-No. 6 Virginia on Feb. 9. Loyola’s No. 1 ranking is the first for the program since the final week of the 2014 regular season. The Greyhounds spent seven weeks in the top spot that season. Loyola plays at Rutgers, ranked 18th in the USILA poll, 16th in Lacrosse Magazine and 19th in Inside Lacrosse, on Saturday. The 2 p.m. game will air live on the Big Ten Network.

MORE MEN: A fourth-quarter surge by No. 11 High Point (4-0) lifted the visiting Panthers over No. 12 Virginia (1-2) on Monday night, 14-13. The Cavaliers entered the final quarter with a12-11 lead before High Point scored three straight goals to take a14-12 lead with 2:02 left to play. Jeff Conner brought Virginia to within one goal, 14-13, with 1:04 left to play, but High Point goalie Tim Troutner (St. Mary’s) made his 17th save to seal the victory. Asher Nolting scored four goals for High Point. Ian Laviano led Virginia with four goals. WOMEN: Twelve players scored at least one goal for No. 7 Syracuse (3-1) in an 18-5 win over visiting Coastal Carolina (1-1). Meaghan Tyrrell and Morgan Alexander each scored three goals for the Orange. Machado an eight-year contract worth at least $240 million, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengal­e. Jon Heyman, an MLBNetwork insider, reported that the offer is believed to be for about $250 million. Heyman also reported that the Padres have made an offer to Harper as well. “I didn’t hear an offer until about mid-January last year,” Hosmer said Monday. “Those guys could be weighing out their options of what’s presented to them on the table. You just don’t know what’s happening. For me, it’s one of those things where I’ve learned to wait back and just wait for it to be official and read all the stuff afterward.” Hosmer signed a $144 million, eight-year deal, the largest contract in Padres history. Like Harper, he is represente­d by agent Scott Boras. The Padres took a step back last year, losing 96 games and finishing last in the NL West. They haven’t had a winning season since 2010 or made the playoffs since 2006. San Diego has what is considered the best farm system in baseball.
