Terps pair football, lacrosse for April 27

For the first time since 2011, the Maryland football team will host its annual Red-White Spring Game on Maryland Day. Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium on April 27 will host the spring game as well as the Terps’ nationally ranked men’s and women’s lacrosse teams hosting rival Johns Hopkins. The football spring game will get underway at noon, while the women’s lacrosse game will start at 4:30 p.m. and the men’s lacrosse game will be played under the lights with a 7:30 p.m. opening faceoff. “Maryland Day is always one of the most vibrant days on campus,” said Maryland athletic director Damon Evans. “To couple that with a full day of athletic competition inside Maryland Stadium is extremely exciting. We’re thrilled to give our community visiting campus three exciting opportunities to see our tremendous student-athletes.” Led by firstyear head coach Michael Locksley, the football team will begin spring practice on March 26. Maryland will hold 15 practices, culminating with the spring game. Admission to the Red-White Spring Game is free. The stadium will be cleared following the spring game and autograph session prior to the lacrosse games. Tickets to the women’s lacrosse game start at $5 and men’s lacrosse at $10. WOMEN’S LACROSSE: Maryland senior Megan Taylor (Glenelg) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the ninth time in her career. In Maryland’s two wins at UMBC and Hofstra, Taylor posted 11 saves to only six goals allowed, a .647 save percentage. Taylor allowed only six goals in 64 minutes of play, a 5.63 goals against average. ... Johns Hopkins freshman Georgia Esmond was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. ... McDaniel scored the first four goals of the game and added six straight to start the second half in a 15-3 win of Misericordia. Megan Quattrone led the Green Terror with four goals and Lindsey Farrell (Loch Raven) contributed two goals, three assists and eight draw controls. Hannah Miller (Marriotts Ridge) made 11 saves in her first start in goal for McDaniel.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Towson senior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall (St. Mary’s) was named the Co- lonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. Woodall helped Towson earn this week’s No. 1 overall ranking in the national polls after a 12-10 victory over then-No. 1 Loyola. The senior dominated faceoffs, going 20-for-26, including a 10-for-10 mark in the fourth quarter as the Tigers collected their first win over a top-ranked team since 1992. ... Johns Hopkins senior co- captain Danny Jones was named to the USILA Team of the Week.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Loyola Maryland (11-21) scored the second half’s first two points, but Boston University (15-17) then went on a 14-0 run to stretch a 34-32 lead to 16 and take control for a 71-63 win in the Patriot League tournament first round Tuesday night. Andrew Kostecka concluded his All-Patriot League First Team season with a team-high 16 points to lead Loyola . ... Mount St. Mary’s freshman guard Vado Morse was named the Northeast Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year. Morse also earned a spot on the league’s All-Rookie team. A six-time NEC Rookie of the Week selection, Morse averaged 14.7 points, 2.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: For the second-straight week, Coppin State’s Jalynda Salley was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

BASEBALL: Mount St. Mary’s sophomore left fielder Myles Nicholson was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Nicholson went 6for-9 (.667) with a double, triple, three walks, three RBIs, six runs scored, five stolen bases and a .785 on-base percentage. ... No. 17 Salisbury (5-3-1) fell to Virginia Wesleyan in 11 innings, 4-2.

SOFTBALL: Mount St. Mary’s dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman, 8-4 and 5-2. Kirsten Mumma had two hits in the second game for the Mountaineers.

FOOTBALL: Clemson’s Tayqoun Johnson (Williamsport) was the winner Monday night of the OJ Brigance Award.

FENCING: Johns Hopkins brought home quite a bit of hardware from the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Championship on Saturday. Hopkins finished in second place overall and was the top Division III team at the championship. Freshman Miya Herman won the foil title and four Blue Jays earned All-NIWFA honors.
