Violence comes only months after Morgan State death in April

- By Lillian Reed

A Morgan State University student was killed near campus early Thursday morning, Baltimore police reported.

Manuel Luis, a business major, was among four people shot overnight. Police spokeswoman Detective Chakia Fennoy Luis said he was killed in a robbery.

Luis was found shot in the upper body around 4:50 a.m. in the 4700 block of Loch Raven Boulevard, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Morgan State officials said his death was a tragedy for the campus that lost another student to violence this year. In April, Kevon Dix, a 23-year-old member of the university choir, was shot to death after leaving a friend’s house in Northeast Baltimore.

“As a community, the Morgan family collectively extends our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the Luis family,” university officials said in a statement on his death. ” We ask that you keep them and their extended family and friends in prayer. In moments of despair, we come together and reaffirm our familial ties and bonds as Morganites.”

Counselors were made available on campus Thursday in the University Counseling Center. Those seeking counseling were told walk-ins were welcome and calls could be made to 443-8853130.

Baltimore homicide detectives are investigating the incident. They ask anyone with information to call detectives at 410-3962100 or leave an anonymous tip with Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Before the shooting near Morgan State, officers responded Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. to an area hospital for a report of a walk-in shooting victim.

Officers spoke with a 25-yearold man who was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his calf. The man told police he was leaving a liquor store in the 5900 block of York Road when he was approached by five unknown men, who announced a robbery. The victim attempted to run when one of the robbers shot him, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 410-396-2455 or Metro Crime Stoppers.

About an hour later at 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 5900 block of Radecke Ave., where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds to his body. The man was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers.

Officers later responded to a report of a shooting around 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the 800 block of E. Eager St. There they found a 34-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the left hand. The man was taken to an area hospital and is listed in good condition, police said.

Police say the man was a sedan driver and believe he was robbed by a customer. After the shooting, police say, the customer drove away with the man’s car.

They ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call 410-396-2433 or Metro Crime Stoppers.
