Seeking impeachment would lead nowhere

I must wholeheartedly agree with Jonah Goldberg when he says “Congressional impeachment show needs to be canceled” (Aug. 2). It is doubtful that Mr. Goldberg and I would agree on much else since he is a fellow at the Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, and a senior editor of the National Review, a conservative publication. I, on the other hand, am a true blue liberal, one of those, as he puts it, “clamoring to see Mr. Trump frogmarched to Guantanamo.”

But about the folly of Democrats pursuing impeachment, he is right. Even if the House moved the process forward, there is not the slightest chance it would pass in the Senate.

In fact, as he points out, the Senate would never agree to discuss impeachment at all.

And with impeachment clearly being the ultimate exercise in futility, it would suck up valuable time, energy and resources and distract the Democrats from focusing on the 2020 election and the many important issues that need to be addressed.

I also agree with Mr. Goldberg when he writes, “if the Democrats have any hope of (winning in the ballot box), they better quit talking about impeachment and start talking about health care and the economy and the other issues voters actually care about.”

But then he goes on to label the Democrats as “a party obsessed with pandering to its base.” Oh, the irony! People who live in glass houses, Mr. Goldberg.
