Lawrence Katz, retired electrical engineer

Lawrence Katz, a retired electrical engineer and World War II veteran, died Tuesday on his 93rd birthday at Sinai Hospital’s Season Hospice after having suffered a stroke. He was a longtime Pikesville resident.

Lawrence Katz, the son of Andrew Katz, an electrician, and his wife, Rose Katz, a homemaker, was born in Chicago. After his father was killed in an industrial accident in1938, his mother and two siblings moved to Northwest Baltimore to be near relatives.

After graduating from Forest Park High School in 1944, he began electrical engineering studies at the Johns Hopkins University, which were interrupted when he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Mr. Katz served from 1945 to 1948 aboard ships as an engine room mechanic. He returned to Hopkins, from which he obtained a degree in electrical engineering. In the 1960s, he earned a master’s degree in business from George Washington University.

He began his career as an electrical engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corp. and subsequently worked for ITT Research and Ford Aerospace in Linthicum, from which he retired in 1992.

Mr. Katz and his wife, the former Rona Shane, whom he married in 1950, were world travelers and took their final cruise together in May, family members said.

Heenjoyed managing his investments and following politics, “much to his chagrin over the last two years,” said a son, Dr. Stephen Katz, of Arnold.

Mr. Katz was a member of Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Congregation in Pikesville.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sol Levinson & Bros. Inc., 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville.

In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Katz is survived by another son, Dr. Howard Katz, of Lutherville; a daughter, Linda Katz, of Washington; a sister, Merilyn Fink, of Roland Park; five grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
