Murray claims 1st ATP title since ’17

Andy Murray claimed his first ATP tour title in more than 21⁄ years at the European Open on Sunday in Antwerp, Belgium.

The 32-year-old Murray rallied to beat fellow three-time Grand Slam champion and No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the title in only his sixth singles tournament since returning from hip surgery in January.

The last time he lifted silverware in singles came in Dubai in March 2017, so it was no surprise that the tears quickly flowed for the Scottish player.

“It means a lot, the last few years have been extremely difficult, both me and Stan have had a lot of injuries,” Murray said.

Murray expects to take a break until the Davis Cup finals next month while he waits for the birth of his third child.

No. 4 seed Denis Shapovalov, 20, of Canada claimed his first career ATP title with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic at the Stockholm Open. ... No. 3 seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerlan­d rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchen­kova to win the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

College football: Alabama junior QB Tua Tagovailoa underwent a procedure for a high ankle sprain and will miss Saturday’s game against Arkansas. He’s expected to return soon. ... Ohio State moved past 2018 national champ Clemson to No. 3 in The AP poll after its 52-3 rout of Northweste­rn, while Wisconsin dropped from sixth to 13th after being upset by Illinois 24-23 ahead of its showdown with the Buckeyes.

Golf: Danielle Kang shot a final-round 2-under 70 win the LPGA Shanghai for the second consecutiv­e year. Kang, 27, finished at a tournament record 16-under 272. Jessica Korda shot a 72 and was second, one stroke back. ... Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium shot a final-round 1-under 72 to win the the French Open near Paris. Colsaerts, 36, finished at 12-under 272 for his third career victory and first since the 2012 World Match Play. Joachim Hansen shot a 68 and was second, one stroke back. ... The final round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Va., was postponed until Monday because of more than 2 inches of rain overnight and a forecast for more. Tommy Tolles and Scott Parel shared the lead after the second round.

Soccer: Adam Lallana scored his first goal in more than two years in the 85th minute to rescue a 1-1 draw for Liverpool against host Manchester United, preserving the English Premier League leader’s unbeaten start. Liverpool had won 17 straight league matches since last season in March but still went six points clear of second-place and two-time defending champ Manchester City in the current standings.
