Stach’s goal gives Century region title
Century and Liberty girls soccer were about five minutes from needing overtime — or penalty kicks — to determine a winner for the third time in four postseason meetings between the teams.
However, sophomore forward Kara Stach made sure that didn’t happen.
Sophomore midfielder Haley Greenwade created a breakaway opportunity for the Knights, and her shot bounced off Liberty goalie Caitlin Mulholland, who went to the ground. With the ball still in play, Stach edged it into the goal and her Knights teammates swarmed her in celebration.
Stach’s goal proved to be the gamewinner as the Knights defeated Liberty 1-0 in a Class 2A West Region1final at Century on Tuesday to remain unbeaten this season.
Century’s victory over Liberty marked the team’s10th shutout this season, and the Knights will play in the state quarterfinals Friday or Saturday.
Wilde Lake 1, River Hill 0: Two days before Halloween, the Wilde Lake girls soccer team exorcised its biggest demon.
After losing to River Hill in each of the last three postseasons, the Wildecats beat the host Hawks, 1-0, on Tuesday in the MPSSAA Class 3A East Region II championship.
The region title is Wilde Lake’s first since 2015, when the Wildecats were state runner-ups. The triumph is also the second over River Hill this season, as Wilde Lake (8-4-1) topped the Hawks on Sept. 24 for its first win over the three-time defending Class 2A champs since 2015.
Jillian Ingram scored the only goal of the game at No. 1 River Hill (9-4-1).
Mount de Sales 1, St. Mary’s 0: Grace Gower scored the game-winner in the first half and Megan Matsko had six saves to lead the host Sailors (13-1) over the Saints (3-10) in an IAAM B Conference quarterfinal. The victory marked the 13th straight for Mount de Sales dating back to a1-0 over Friends on Sept. 13.
Severn 4, Glenelg Country 0: Mia Hilmer scored twice and Alina Valencia had a goal and an assist to lead the host Admirals (10-4) past the Dragons (2-9) in an IAAM B Conference quarterfinal. Severn scored three goals in the second half.
C. Milton Wright 1, Bel Air 0: Freshman Katie Roszko scored the game-winner, her fifth goal in three playoff games, to lift the host Mustangs (8-8-1) over the Bobcats (8-10-3) in Class 3A North region II championship. Hereford upset No. 9 Towson, 3-0, in the region I final of Class 3A North.

Lansdowne 2 Owings Mills 1 (Lansdowne wins, 5-4, on PKs): All five Lansdowne shooters converted penalty kicks and the host Vikings (11-1-2) defeated Owings Mills 5-4 in a shootout in the Class 2A North Region I championship game that was tied at 1 after regulation and double overtime.
Nana Andoh, Ai Ling, Hoi Tha and Thau Hmu made the first four penalty kicks and sophomore Mike Miranda made the game-winning clincher.
Miranda scored the first goal, off an assist from sophomore Ben Kolarek.
Oscar Enomorado Navarro scored a first-half goal for the Eagles (7-6).
Century 2, Liberty 0: A disallowed goal proved to be the turning point in Tuesday’s Class 2A West Region 1 final.
The Knights, having lost the Carroll County Athletic League title to Liberty two weeks ago, exacted some revenge in capturing the regional title with a 2-0 road victory. Midfielder Alex Grasso scored his team’s second goal of the game, with a little less than 9 minutes remaining in a first half dominated by the visiting team.
Jackson Glenn put Century (12-4) on the board when he converted a penalty kick with 10 minutes to play in the half.
Wilde Lake 2, River Hill 1: The Wildecats scored two goals a minute apart to defeat the Hawks to win the 3A East Region II championship.
Grant Gladden scored in the 47th minute and Liam Nesbitt knocked a corner kick in the 48th minute to propel Wilde Lake. Jeff Fuentes scored in the 53rd minute for River Hill.
