Former Meade basketball coach dead at 80

Young had more than 500 wins in his coaching career

-

Butch Young, who transformed Meade High into a perennial powerhouse in boys’ basketball, died this week at the age of 80.

Young, one of only three boys basketball coaches in Anne Arundel County history to surpass 500 victories, succumbed on Tuesday morning due to complications from dementia.

Barbara Young said her husband of 53 years battled bladder cancer five years ago and believes the extensive chemotherapy he received at the time contributed to his decline.

Young compiled an overall career record of 507-321 in 36 seasons as a head coach, first at Severna Park then Meade.

Visitation for Young will be held Sunday (3-5 p.m.) at Singleton Funeral Home in Glen Burnie. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday (11 a.m.) at St. John’s Lutheran Church (300 West Maple Road) with a one-hour visitation beforehand.

Young will be interred at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown with a visitation (noon) and service (1 p.m.) being held before the burial.

Horse Racing: Gunpowder Farms and

Millennium Farms’ 3-year-old filly Arrifana, racing around two turns for the first time, kept her perfect record intact with a popular half-length victory in Friday’s feature race at Laurel Park. With regular rider Julian Pimentel aboard, Arrifana ($2.40) ran about 11/16 miles in 1:43.72 over a fast main track for her fourth win in as many starts for trainer Kelly Rubley.

Arrifana, a bay daughter of two-time Horse of the Year and 2014 Hall of Famer Curlin, was sent off the 1-5 favorite over five older rivals in the open $55,000 allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up.

The second day of Laurel Park’s Breeders’ Cup Watch Party will take place Saturday from 1-9 p.m. inside the state-ofthe-art Sports Book located on the secondfloor clubhouse. Admission is free and seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Laurel will open its doors at 11 a.m.

First race post time for Laurel’s live 11-race card is 12:25 p.m. The first Breeders’ Cup race is scheduled to go off at 2:55 p.m. Saturday (Filly & Mare Sprint), with the $6 million Classic set for 8:44 p.m.

NHL: The Washington Capitals will honor the World Series Champion Washington Nationals at Capital One Arena before their game against the Calgary Flames on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Members of the Nationals, as well as the Commissioner’s Trophy, will be in attendance and recognized on the ice during a pregame ceremony.

The Capitals recalled forward Liam O’Brien from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. O’Brien, 24, has registered one goal and one assist and 28 penalty minutes in 17 career games with the Capitals.

National Women’s Soccer League: Washington Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
