N. Illinois sprints past Coppin State

Huskies take early lead, never lose it in 81-69 win

Host Northern Illinois took an early nine-point lead and rolled past Coppin State, 81-69, in men’s basketball Friday night. The Huskies improved to 1-2 and the Eagles fell to 1-3.

Coppin State was led by a trio of double-digit scorers: Dejuan Clayton (17 points), Andrew Robinson (16 points) and Kamar McKnight (15 points).

St. Mary’s 65, Catholic 49: Justin Milstead scored 18 points to lead the visiting Seahawks (1-2) past the Cardinals (0-2) at the Battle of D.C. and Maryland at Hood College.

Becker 56, McDaniel 53: Josh Sproul had 16 points and Caleb Johnson had 15 points, but the Green Terror (0-1) fell to the Hawks (2-1) at the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic at Stevenson.

Roanoke 88, Goucher 50: Cam Isaacs (Randallsto­wn) had a game-high 15 points, but the Gophers (0-3) fell to the host Maroons (1-1) at the Dick Leftwich Tip-Off tournament.

Women

St. Peter’s 82, Coppin State 57: The visiting Peahens (2-1) used a 25-10 run in the third quarter to pull away from the Eagles (0-3).

Chance Graham (22 points and 12 rebounds) broke the Coppin State school record for career rebounds with 917. The previous record holder was Rene Doctor with 908.

Bowie State 58, Slippery Rock 50: Talanya Hutton had a game-high 18 points to lead the host Bulldogs (1-0) over the Rock (1-2).

McDaniel 83, PSU-Berks 52: Natalie Mehl had a game-high 17 points to lead the host Green Terror (1-0) past the Nittany Lions (0-3) in the McDaniel Tip-Off Tournament.

Allegheny 58, Goucher 56: The visiting Gophers (1-1) outscored the Gators (2-0), 20-12, in the fourth quarter, but the rally fell short.

Mansfield 62, Frostburg State 53: Jada Holland had 12 points and Amanda Emory (Seton Keough) had 11 points, but the visiting Bobcats (0-3) fell to the Mountainee­rs (2-1).
