Maryland attacker Hartshorn will not return for 5th season

-

Maryland women’s lacrosse senior attacker Kali Hartshorn announced Thursday that she will not return for a fifth season.

“After a long month of deciding what I wanted to do, I have decided not to return to Maryland for a fifth year,” Hartshorn said in a statement released by the team. “This decision was much harder than I ever could have imagined.”

Last month, the NCAAagreed to grant a fifth year of eligibility to Division I seniors in spring sports after the coronavirus pandemic canceled all events. But Hartshorn said at the time that while playing a fifth year was “definitely something in the back of my mind,” she was eager to begin a new chapter.

Hartshorn, who ranks second all-time in Maryland history with 421 draw controls and was on pace to break three-time Tewaaraton Award winner Taylor Cummings’ record, had 154 goals and 47 assists in 73 career games.

High school sports: COVID-19 is thought to have taken the life of former Annapolis High athletic director Fred Stauffer.

Stauffer, who served as athletic director at Annapolis High from 1971 through 1999, died on Thursday afternoon at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Stauffer, who had been in failing health the last few years, had been placed on a ventilator. The longtime Millersville resident was 80 years old.

While no official cause of death has been determined, Colleen Stauffer thinks her husband’s death was caused by the virus. “I don’t know that for a fact, but I’m going to guess that was the case,” she said.

Word spread quickly on Thursday within the Annapolis High community with former colleagues, coaches and student-athletes praising Stauffer for his unwavering commitment to the school.

“Fred Stauffer was one of the nicest men you would ever want to meet, and he gave everything he had to Annapolis High,” said Dave Gehrdes, who succeeded his former boss and close friend as athletic director at the school. “This is a huge loss to the entire Annapolis High community. Fred was an incredible mentor to so many.”
