Thiem making another run in French Open

Dominic Thiem, the French Open runner-up last year and in 2018, both times to Rafael Nadal, advanced to the fourth round for the fifth consecutiv­e time, with another straight-set victory in this week’s first encounter in Paris between seeded men.

The victim of the third-seeded Austrian’s fierce backhand and super-quick court coverage under the new roof on Court Philippe Chatrier was No. 28 Casper Ruud by 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal also marched on in his pursuit of a 13th French Open title and record-tying 20 major overall. His opponent, Stefano Travagliap­roved no match for Nadal’s overpoweri­ng clay-court game. Nadal was on court for just 95 minutes, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-0.

Sebastian Korda, Nadal’s next opponent, is the 20-year-old son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda. Korda defeated Pedro Martinez 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

The2015 champion, Stan Wawrinka, fell to French wild card Hugo Gaston, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win. Ranked 239th, Gaston next plays Thiem.

In the women’s draw, top-seeded Simona Halep defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-1. The 19-year-old Anisimova had beaten the 2018 champion in straight sets in the quarterfin­als last year.

Auto racing: Josef Newgarden, a two-time IndyCar champion, pulled away from the rest of the field over the 18 laps, racing to his third win of the season, this time by a margin of 14.2940 seconds over Alexander Rossi.

College football: The Hawaii and Bahamas bowls were canceled by ESPN Events because of the pandemic and related travel restrictio­ns.

Golf: Keegan Bradley fired a 7-under 65, including three straight birdies on the back nine to take a two-shot lead over J.T. Poston and Charley Hoffman at the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip in Jackson, Miss. Bradley, whose victory in the BMW Championsh­ip at Aronimink two years ago was his only title in the last eight years, was at 13-under 131. ... Nasa Hataoka shot a 4-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Mi Hyang Lee heading into the weekend in the Shoprite LPGA Classic in Galloway, N.J.

NFL: Melvin Gordon sealed the Broncos’ first win of the season with a 43-yard touchdown run with 1:48 left to beat the still winless — Jets 37-28 on Thursday night.
