Baltimore Democrats to nominate successor to Nick Mosby in House
Democratic leaders in Baltimore will meet Tuesday to nominate a new member of the House of Delegates, but it could take a while.
Fifteen people have applied for the seat representing the 40th District, which became vacant when Nick Mosby was sworn in as Baltimore City Council president earlier this month.
The Baltimore City Democratic State Central Committee will convene an online meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to interview all 15 candidates. The seven voting members of the central committee who live in the 40th district will vote publicly following the interviews.
The 40th District includes neighborhoods in West and Southwest Baltimore.
Those who have applied include: Janet Allen, Marlon Amprey, Joshua Harris, Derrick Johnson, Bill Marker, Nancy McCormick, John Moser, Gary Norman, Crystal Jackson Parker, Brian Sims, China Boak Terrell, Westley West, Kathryn Shulman, Myriam Ralston and Sueann Yang.
The interviews and vote will be conducted over Zoom and the public can watch via the central committee’s Facebook page.
The central committee will forward its pick to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who has the final say over the appointment.
Meanwhile, there also are two other vacancies in the Maryland General Assembly that need to be filled.
Republicans in Howard and Carroll counties are working to nominate a candidate to fill the House of Delegates seat in District 9A that will be open when Del. Warren Miller’s resignation is effective later this week.
Those who have applied include: Christopher Eric Bouchat, Allison Cordell, Scott Jendrek, Kyle Lorton, Reid Novotny, Glenn Peters, Mavourene Robinson and Chris Yates.
Republican central committee members in the two counties will meet separately to interview the candidates, and they are still determining whether they will vote jointly or separately on a replacement for Miller, said Steve Wilson, the Howard County chairman.
And Senate President Emeritus Thomas V. Mike Miller retired last week, leaving open a Senate seat in the state’s District 27. The Democratic committees in Prince George’s, Calvert and Charles counties will nominate a replacement.
