Three homicides in city over weekend amid rash of shootings
Baltimore Police are investigating three apparent homicides, including a fatal stabbing, and multiple shootings as the city has seen a wave of violence since the new year began.
The department said 49-year-old Dereck Jackson, 33-year-old Tiffany Wilson and an unidentified 69-year-old were killed in separate incidents dating back to Friday.
In a news release, the department wrote that Jackson was found dead “from obvious head trauma” at his home in the 300 block of E. 23rd St. around 3:50 p.m. Saturday when Eastern District officers were called to his home for a well-being check.
His body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to rule his official cause of death. Baltimore homicide detectives are investigating Jackson’s death as a murder, the release said.
Western District officers found the unidentified 69- year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest around 6:25 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Reisterstown Road. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives have no suspects and are looking for witnesses.
Police said Saturday that Wilson died Friday after being fatally stabbed onthe block where she lived, making her the first homicide victim of 2021 in Baltimore.
Lakeyria Doughty, 26, known for her dirt bike skills and her role in an HBO film about the city’s riding culture, was arrested Saturday and charged with the murder of Wilson, her partner, police said.
The three killings were part of a violent holiday weekend in the city. Baltimore Police are also investigating five other shootings that took place since Friday. A sixth shooting in Southwest Baltimore was deemed accidental.
The year’s first reported shooting came around 1:54 p.m. Friday. Police responded to the 1100 block of Wheeler Ave. in West Baltimore and found am an with gun shot wounds to the leg and torso. The man said he’d been approached by an unidentified person with a gun, and a physical altercation ensued, resulting in his wounds, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital.
A second shooting was reported at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, when a 17-year-old walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound, the police department said in a statement.
Police said the boy told investigators he’d been walking near South Warwick Avenue and Hollins Street when a pair of masked assailants tried to rob him. One of the masked men brandished a handgun and, as the boy grabbed it, the gunman fired, police said. The boy was struck in the right hand; his injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
About 10 hours later, officers responded to a ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alert in the 2100 block of W. North Ave., police said.
Police said officers found evidence of gunfire but that nobody had been shot. That’s likely because the man was walking into a hospital, police said. Officers responded to the hospital after medical staff told them about a 28-year-old with a gunshot wound to his side.
Police described the man’s condition as serious but stable.
Authorities said a 24-year-old man was injured while cleaning rifles with friends at a home in Southwest Baltimore on Friday night. The unidentified man checked himself into a hospital around 9:40 p.m.
Detectives said a long gun went off, striking the man in the leg. No charges will be filed, police said.
On Sunday, police from the Northwest District responded to the 2800 block of Lawina Ave. in the Windsor Hills neighborhood at 2:42 a.m. and found a 45-year-old man and a 41- year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds inside a home. Both people were transported to an area hospital and are expected to survive.
Less than six hours later, two women, 18 and 21, were shot in Northern Baltimore, but are expected to survive their injuries.
Police wrote that officers were called to the 4200 block of Bonner Road at 8:12 a.m. for a report of a shooting and found the two women suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The two were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The department said the shooting suspect is a 35-year-old man who barricaded himself inside a building at the location, but was ultimately taken into custody without incident. The department did not identify who the suspect is nor what his motive was for shooting the two women, writing that charges against the man are pending.
