Towson halts activities because of COVID-19

The Towson women’s basketball program suspended its season Tuesday morning after a member of the coaching staff tested positive for the coronavirus.

The team announced that the coach tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning, and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test confirmed that result Tuesday morning.

Upcoming home games against James Madison on Tuesday and Elon on Saturday and Sunday and road games against UNCW on Jan. 16 and 17 have been postponed. Makeup dates have not been finalized.

The women’s team joins the men’s program in pausing its season. The men halted all activities on Dec. 29 after a player tested positive.

Coppin honors: Coppin State’s Aliyah Lawson has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week.

A junior from Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Lawson led all players with 18 points in the Eagles’ comeback victory over Delaware State on Monday night.

Lawson hit 6 of 15 shots from the floor, including a career-high five 3-pointers in the win while also being credited with six rebounds and three steals.

In Coppin’s three games this season, Lawson has averaged a team-high 15.0 points while also pacing the Eagles with seven assists and five steals. Lawson’s 15.0 points are currently fifth in the MEAC and she ranks ninth in the conference in assists while leading the conference in 3-point field goals made per game.

▪ Coppin State’s DeJuan Clayton has been named the MEAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Anthony Tarke and Nendah Tarke earned Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.

A redshirt senior from Bowie, Clayton returned to action after missing six games and lit up Delaware State for a career-high 32 points in Coppin’s comeback victory on Monday night. Clayton also buried a careerhigh 14-of-15 free throws and added five rebounds and six assists. In the second half alone, Clayton recorded 26 points on 10-of11 free throws.

For the third time this season, Anthony Tarke is taking home Defensive Player of the Week accolades. In Coppin’s victory over the Hornets, Tarke led the Eagles with eight rebounds and also contributed with four blocks and four steals to go with his 14 points.

Nendah Tarke claimed his second Rookie of the Week award after tallying 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals against Delaware State. Tarke hit 9-of-13 free throws in the win.
