SMITH, Barbara (Age 94)

-

Barbara Smith passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt to her two daughters, granddaughter and many nieces and nephews, Barbara enjoyed gardening, reading the newspaper, and volunteering in multiple venues.

Barbara was born in Kane, PA to Hugh and Clara White and moved to Guilford College, NC when she was 5 years old. She grew up in that area and attended Women’s College, now UNC Greensboro, earning a Bachelors in Business Administration. Upon graduating she worked at the Bement School in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Later she worked for Bazooka Bubble Gum and finally for the duPont Company in Wilmington, Delaware. She met her late husband Everitt while working in Wilmington and married him in the fall of 1952. The couple lived in Philadelphia for several years before settling in what would become their “forever home,” the Baltimore area.

Barbara was a quiet lifelong learner and volunteer. During her daughters’ childhoods, she spent time leading Girl Scout troops, teaching Sunday School and directing children’s choirs. She sang as a soprano in both the choir at Grace United Methodist and then Timonium United Methodist. She enjoyed playing the piano and guitar when not busy with other avocations, including sewing, playing bridge, and gardening. In the latter portion of her life, she took up quilting, needlework, basket weaving, and refinishing and building furniture reproductions. She baked casseroles and served on a weekly basis at the Sharp Street United Methodist soup kitchen. As a member of the Broadmead community, she dedicatedly served in the kitchen goods area of the bi-annual Barn Sale. Barbara and her husband both enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. She particularly enjoyed photographing dead trees and wildflowers on their many car trips across the US and southern Canada.

Barbara is survived by her two daughters, Kathy and Beth, Kathy’s life partner, Norie, her son-in-law, Steve, and granddaughter, Katie, as well as multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.
