Corkeron, Wilde Lake take out River Hill

- By Jacob Steinberg

Traveling up the floor with speed, Wilde Lake sophomore Kain Corkeron rose up for a two-handed flush that electrified the home crowd and sent them home happy.

That dunk put the finishing touches on an impressive all-around performance from the Wildecats in their 65-51 victory over River Hill. Corkeron led all scorers with 22 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

“I had that bucket before, a little floater, and I could feel the game kind of getting there,” Corkeron said of the transition slam. “Then I got on the break and broke away. I knew I’d get the dunk in and just seeing the crowd and everyone jumping was amazing.”

Corkeron was often the beneficiary of unselfish ball movement, finding creases in the backside corner of the Hawks’ 3-2 zone. Overall, the Wildecats (4-2, 4-2) knocked down 11 triples swinging the ball from side to side to create open looks. Junior Nathan Hiteshew and sophomore Xavier Gilliam also found success from behind the arc, finishing with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Century 51, Western Tech 37: The Knights got 14 points from John Pavlick and balanced scoring behind him to pick up the win. Andrew Marcinko added nine points for Century (12-2, 5-1), while Joshua Ahulamibe chipped in seven and Ben Chenoweth added six.

Griffin Haberern led the Lions with 16 points while Ethan Maokhamphiou tallied 14 points. Liam Long led the Owls with nine points, while Chance Byrnes had five points, six rebounds and three assists. Spalding 82, John Carroll 71: The Cavaliers (14-3) defeated the host Patriots (10-7) in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association nondivision game. North Harford 49, Havre de Grace 46: North Harford senior Laynie Sheahy sank a 3-point shot as time was running out to lift the Hawks past host Havre de Grace, 49-46, in an Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Susquehanna Division game.

“I wanted to end the game and do it for our team, I was just happy to hit it,” Sheahy said.

Sheahy’s big shot was an immediate response to a 3-pointer thrown in by Havre

de Grace senior Kaedence Bryant. Her shot with under 15 seconds left tied the game at 46.

“All the hard work we’re putting in finally, no more COVID problems, meaning sickness and illness, hard work at practice and heart,” Hawks coach Wayne Huller said. “They got heart and that’s all I need.”
