Boys’ Latin topples St. Mary’s

In boys lacrosse, Lakers defense deals first loss to nationally ranked Saints

No one could stop St. Mary’s boys lacrosse. No one, at least, until it met Cardin Stoller.

The Boys’ Latin senior goalkeeper gulped down 14 St. Mary’s shots, anchoring the first team in 2022 to defeat the nationally ranked Saints in a defensive battle.

After surging to a significant lead at halftime, the visiting No. 2 Lakers piled on two more two goals in the fourth quarter to become the first ones to deliver a loss to the No. 1 Saints, 7-4.

St. Mary’s loss included some other rarities, too — no goals from leading scorer Nick Golini, and not for a lack of trying. He and the other Saints took 47 shots that, thanks to a smothering Boys’ Latin defense, they just could not complete.

“I think that’s the first game we played a full four quarters,” Stoller said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to get all year, and to hold a team like that to three goals is pretty impressive.”

With just one Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference loss, the Saints (14-1) still sit atop the standings. With only two games to go, there are bigger, more important prizes ahead. St. Mary’s is locked into a top-four seed, guaranteeing a home playoff game.

Boys lacrosse

Calvert Hall 13, Archbishop Spalding 8: Davis Provost and Jordan Wray each had a hat trick to lead the host Cardinals (11-4, 5-3 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) over the Cavaliers (10-4, 5-3). Calvert Hall opened with a 7-0 run and caused three back-to-back shot clock violations.

Loyola Blakefield 11, Severn 7: Willie Perez made 11 saves and Paul Baldwin had three goals and an assist, but the visiting Admirals (11-4, 5-3 MIAA A Conference) fell to the Dons (5-8, 3-5). The victory ended a two-game slide.

Key 6, Concordia Prep 5: Reid Chapman scored three goals, Kasper Kelly had two goals and Jaeden Clark had a goal and an assist as the Obezags beat the Saints in overtime. Henry Robbins made 17 saves for Key.

Hammond 8, Oakland Mills 7: The Golden Bears (1-7, 1-5 Howard County) earned their first win of the year in overtime. The Scorpions (0-9) scored a season-high seven goals as both Xavier Vereen and Blake Nguyen scored twice. Hideo Matsuoka made five saves. Nick Humphrey, Emilio Rivas and Peter Farley each scored, and Farley added an assist.

Manchester Valley 5, Bel Air 4: JT Calhoun had two goals and two assists to lead the Mavericks. Gavin Reid and Blake Ray each had a goal and an assist, and Marquis Morris also scored. Devin Trzeciak had two goals and Grady Mumm made nine saves for Bel Air.

Havre de Grace 11, Winters Mill 9: Raegan Dent scored six goals to lead the host Warriors (8-5) over the Falcons. Jarred Meehan had three goals for the Warriors. The game was tied 4-4 in the first half. Reed Postlethwait scored four goals for the Falcons. Owen Boone and Jesse Tobias each scored two. Seth Meyers made 12 saves.

Francis Scott Key 10, Boonsboro 4: Graham Johns scored three goals to lead the Eagles in the win. Gabe Dell and Ray Whittington each backed him with two goals. Bryce Zepp, Manny Flick, Andrew Vogel and Elijah Harris handed out two assists, with Evan Austin and Ben Lombroia also getting assists. In goal, Keith LaPierre made 10 saves.

South River 15, Northeast 4: Ryan Matlick netted four goals and two assists, while Henry Sykes added two goals and two assists and Connor Chick had two goals and an assist as the Seahawks handled the Eagles. LaLa Titow. Greg Usher made 20 saves for South River. RJ Breeden netted two goals and Blaine Bennett stopped 23 shots for Northeast.

Hereford 17, Franklin 7: JP Revitte had a 10-point night split evenly with five goals and five assists for the Bulls. Logan Sinsebox had four goals and three assists, while Dillon Bakhsh also scored four goals.

North County 20, Glen Burnie 5: Nick Mahoney produced seven goals and an assist and Marcus Ortiz with deposited five goals to lead the Knights over the Gophers. Brothers Josh and Matthew Martel each recorded three goals and three assists for North County. Travis Peach provided four goals and Joe Crenshaw chipped in a goal for Glen Burnie.

Girls lacrosse

City 7, Glen Burnie 4: Angel’Lique Lockhart, Emyae Dorsey, Alexandra Smith and Dakota Smith each scored a goal, but the Gophers fell to the Knights. Brynn Mitchell totaled five draw controls and Melanie Zaleskiwicz made seven saves for Glen Burnie.

C. Milton Wright 14, South Carroll 9: Leah Miller scored three for the Cavaliers in the loss. Reese Athey and Shannon McTavish each scored two. Claire Vasquenza made 10 saves.

Eastern Tech 12, Sparrows Point 9: Jess Urban scored four goals and Abby Schwartz-Mitchell and Keira Choi each tallied three in the win. Leah Brammer had two assists, and Monica Mumma made six saves.

Century 8, Liberty 7: The Knights held on to their unbeaten season with a close win over their neighboring rivals. Caroline Little had four goals and Jasmine Stanton scored three for Century. Val Thompson scored two for Liberty, while Riley Matthiesen had a goal and three assists.

North Harford 16, Aberdeen 3: Grace Underwood, Allison Stewart, Claire Moffittt and Claire McMahon each scored two goals to lead the visiting Hawks over the Eagles. Twelve Hawks had goals. North Harford led 14-2 in the first half.

Baseball

St. Paul’s 12, AACS 2: Caleb Gentry singled and drove in a run, while Will Henderson, Ryan Jones and Jacob Merenda each collected a hit, but the Eagles, who committed eight errors, allowed five runs in the fifth inning in the loss to the Crusaders in five innings.

Key 10, Park 1: Armand Ortiz pitched five innings of one-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out six, while Will Dowton tossed two innings of relief, yielding no hits and no runs, fanning three as the Obezags handled the Bruins. Lachlan Armstrong had a pair of doubles, driving in three runs, Trey Brandon added a pair of base hits and two RBIs, Luke Nespole doubled and drove in a run, and Ortiz helped his cause with a triple for Key.

Arundel 13, Annapolis 3: Brendan Sweeney doubled and singled, collecting three RBIs, and Chris Ricks went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Wildcats. Jake Long singled twice and drove in a pair, Nelson Grajales singled and had two RBIs, and John Greenwalt registered a pair of hits for Arundel. Sebastian, Alejandro Casanova and Dom Montini had hits for Annapolis.

Broadneck 6, North County 3: Anthony Cirrincione and Nick Stergiou each finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Sean Murphy collected a pair of hits to lead the Bruins, who took the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth inning, over the Knights. Josh Ehrlich also had a double and drove in a run, and Calvon Cook added a hit and RBI for Broadneck. Thor Hildebrand recorded two hits and an RBI and Kevin Santos singled twice for North County.

Indian Creek 13, Gerstell 10: Xavier Quigley hit a pair of home runs and drove in five runs and Patrick Smith added a homer and a single, driving in two as the Eagles scored six runs in both the second and third innings to defeat the Falcons. Nicholas Pratt delivered a pair of hits, including a double and two RBIs, Riley Handwerger had a double and two RBIs.

Severn 15, St. Vincent Pallotti 5: Ben Campion had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two and Tristan Collins chipped in with a pair of hits and three RBIs as the Admirals used seven hits, nine walks, five hit batters and 16 stolen bases to top the Panthers. Campbell Grimes reached base every time he went to the plate, stole four bases and scored four times for Severn.

South River 3, Southern 2: Quinn Yellin picked up two RBIs, while Sam Howard threw 6 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out four as the Seahawks nipped the Bulldogs. Churchill Bridgman went the distance for Southern, allowing three runs on three hits and fanning six.

Archbishop Spalding 5, Archbishop Curley 1: Eddie Sargent threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Cavaliers. Caleb Estes gave Spalding the lead with a two-run home run in the third inning. Braeden Piotrowski was 3-for-3, while Matt Gormley and Michael Roeder added RBI singles.

Gilman 8, John Carroll 7: Gilman tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth then walked off with the win after an error in the seventh. For the Patriots, Matthew Archibald homered and drove in two. Dallas Brooks also had two RBIs.

Bel Air 13, Havre de Grace 0: Dyllon Barrett hit a home run in the first inning and the host Bobcats shut out the Warriors. Winner Cole Saxon worked two innings and struck out three.

Old Mill 5, Northeast 0: Josh Edwards threw a two-hit shutout, striking out eight to lead the Patriots to the win over the Eagles. Myles Fulton, Daniel Villegas and Connor Newman each had a hit and an RBI and Logan Gahres doubled for Old Mill. Dakota Patton and Jack Schrieber provided the hits for Northeast.

Glenelg Country 6, Friends 5: The host Dragons (9-6, 8-5 MIAA B Conference) scored runs in the first four innings and beat the Quakers (4-9, 4-8). Winner Dylan Melton went six innings, gave up two runs, walked five and struck out 10. The win was the fourth straight.

Softball

Arundel 17, Annapolis 2: Savannah Brooks allowed two hits and struck out 10 and Emma Schurr went 2-for-2 to lead the Wildcats to the win over the Panthers. Brooks, along with Bria Sewell, Sanaa Brown, Sierra Williams and Aidan Koch also had hits for Arundel.

Chesapeake 10, Severna Park 0: Alana Watts homered and doubled, driving in four runs and Kendall Thomas threw six shutout innings, allowing just one hit for the Cougars. Sophia Bianco tripled and drove in a run. Sam Larkin, Norah Hart and Emilee Leone each had two hits, and Thomas drove in a run for Chesapeake. Addison Bianco doubled for the only hit for Severna Park.

Harford Tech 4, Elkton 1: Brianna Lunenfeld doubled twice and drove in three for the Cobras. Aubrey Gump and Hayden Kobert were each 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mikayla McJilton pitched the first five innings allowing just two hits while striking out 10. Abbey Reed closed out the game, allowing one hit in two innings.

Old Mill 9, Northeast 2: The Patriots had 14 hits, led by Reagan McCoy with a triple and two doubles. Kayla Musgrove added three hits as the Patriots scored seven runs in the first inning. Brynn Mulzer helped her cause with two hits, while scattering seven hits in an earned run in a complete game.

Boys tennis

Severn 4, Loyola 1: Matthew McNair, Daniel McNair and Nate Krall won their singles matches in straight sets, while the team of Aiden Gilroy and Alan Tchamourliyski also won in straight sets in No. 1 doubles as the Admirals won.

South Carroll 5, Westminster 0: Steven Cox and Daniel Laurel each won singles matches for the Cavaliers. Colby Dixon and Will Stromberg, Frederick Fritchie Jr. and Zac Sealfon, and Sean Mossman and Chase Loden won doubles matches.

Girls tennis

Westminster 4, South Carroll 1: Meredith Hoppenstein clinched the match with a hard-fought three-set win at second singles. The Owls swept doubles play with wins from Jennifer Sorkin and Katherine Raab, Miranda Moshang and Gillian Blubaugh, and Sophie Long and Stella Schoberg. Casey Reno won first singles for South Carroll.
