Spalding volleyball rallies past Mount de Sales

- By Craig Clary

Archbishop Spalding volleyball got an early wake-up call against Mount de Sales when the Sailors won the first set convincingly Thursday night, but the Cavaliers rallied for a 10-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 victory.

Addison Collins led the Cavaliers (7-2 overall, 4-0 IAAM A Conference) with 13 kills, and Maria Sanabia and Maya Mauro also had strong games with eight and five kills, respectively. Giana Dinoto led the Sailors (6-9, 2-3) with a match-high 14 kills.

Spalding overcame the first-set woes thanks to a stronger defense and a variety of offensive weapons for senior setter Kristen Burton.

“The first set was kind of like a warmup for us, but the second set we really got it together, and we really just worked as a team and the teamwork is just the most important thing that you can do,” Burton said. “We work together and build momentum, and once you get that first good swing, it all goes up from there.”

Spalding coach Corby Lawrence had a feeling his team might get off to a slow start.

“I have a couple of my starters who are struggling a little bit with a little back pain and a little neck pain. So we got here and they didn’t have it when we warmed up, so I could kind of tell it was bothering my hitter and my main passer,” he said. “It was just a matter of them trying to figure out if they were going to progressively be able to stay and play with a little pain or not.”

Mauro and senior libero Sophia Vance played the entire game with nagging injuries, and Burton was the glue that kept the team rolling with solid defense and pinpoint setting.

“She played incredible tonight, her decision-making in those moments to try to find that rhythm of hitters and then she was finding the next possible hitter,” Lawrence said. “We talked about making sure our hitters were getting their options, whether it was back row or whether it was a slide, so we weren’t one-dimensional, and I think that really helped our game tonight.”

It was the second tough loss on back-toback nights for the Sailors.

“I’m going to give them credit based upon, they are a great team, they are a first-place team,” Mount de Sales coach Andre Quattlebaum said.

“I think we ran into a situation where we had a five-set grueling match yesterday against Maryvale Prep and then we had to come in again and play a top team like Spalding.”

Edgewood 19, Perryville 16: Edgewood junior Jahmir Torres touched the ball one time Thursday night, and it gave his team an overtime win. Torres raced 10 yards for a touchdown, giving Edgewood a 19-16 nondivision win over host Perryville in the battle between Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference schools.

“When I got that call, I knew I had to make a play, I knew that I got to be big for my team,” Torres said. “So, when I’m in the end zone I just know, I did what I had to do, I made my team proud, made everybody proud.”

Torres’ heroics came after Perryville’s Zack Ayers kicked a 20-yard field goal that put the Panthers ahead, 16-13.

Centennial 8, Hammond 0: Centennial junior midfielder Helen Baldy fired a shot on goal off the penalty corner, but Hammond goalie Lily DeBlasio was there for the pad save.

The ball quickly rebounded back to Baldy, who rifled a backhanded shot past DeBlasio for her second goal of the game and the Eagles’ third of the first half.

That sequence epitomized Baldy’s effectiveness as she scored a team and careerhigh five goals in Centennial’s 8-0 win over Hammond.

“I think just constantly just pushing myself to try and get into the circle and take shots because that’s something I’ve really been working on, just ripping shots as soon as I can,” Baldy said. “Definitely a goal for me, so that was good.”

Boys soccer

Broadneck 2, Arundel 0: Broadneck boys soccer hasn’t needed to score much to succeed.

Recent victories have come by one and two goals mostly — four goals was a veritable feast.

The reasoning behind the numbers is simple: No, the Bruins don’t score much; they don’t need to.

As evidenced Thursday against Arundel, one goal in each half is all you need when one of the best defenses in the county is hunting your opponent down.

Thanks to its defense, the Bruins recorded their sixth shutout of the season, 2-0 over host Arundel, also their sixth win in a row.

There were no expected cheers nor gloating of any kind when the buzzer sounded. Broadneck coach Sean Tettemer called his players in, and the boys simply lined up to shake their opponents’ hands.

“Our coach is very good at keeping us humble,” said junior Ethan Colon, who scored one of the goals and anchored the defense. “He always preaches that. I love that we’re humble. We never talk trash. It’s a brotherhood.”
