AROUND THE HORN White Sox:

The White Sox promoted Chris Getz to general manager on Thursday, staying inside the organization for the position almost two decades after the franchise last won a playoff series. Getz is replacing Rick Hahn, who was fired by chairman Jerry Reinsdorf along with president of baseball operations Ken Williams on Aug. 22. Williams was in his 11th season as executive vice president after serving as the club’s general manager for 12 years. Hahn had been with the White Sox since 2002. The White Sox have a total of three victories in three playoff appearances since winning the 2005 World Series. They began this year with postseason aspirations, but they’re fourth in the AL Central with a 53-81 record after Wednesday’s 10-5 victory against the Orioles. Getz, who turned 40 on Wednesday, was hired by the White Sox in October 2016 as the team’s director of player development. He was promoted to assistant GM in January 2021. He was also promoted to senior VP on Thursday. Getz’s promotion is likely a positive sign for first-year manager Pedro Grifol. Getz played for the Royals from 2010 to 2013 and also worked for the club after his playing career. Before he was hired by the White Sox in November, Grifol spent the previous 10 seasons in a variety of coaching roles with the Royals.

Guardians: The Guardians, who are trying to chase down the Twins in the AL Central race, claimed starter Lucas Giolito and relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo López off waivers from the Angels. The acquisitions didn’t cost the Guardians any prospects. The Guardians are five games behind the first-place Twins with 28 games left. By getting Giolito, Moore and López, the Guardians hope to catch the Twins, defend their division title and make the postseason. It could be a memorable final surge as manager Terry Francona has hinted he’ll retire in October. In making the moves, the Guardians added nearly $2.1 million in payroll. They’ll assume $1,241,667 for the final 31 days of Giolito’s $7.45 million salary, $416,667 of Moore’s $2.5 million salary and $437,500 of Lopez’s $2.625 million salary. An All-Star in 2019, Giolito, 29, was traded by the White Sox along with López in July. The right-hander went just 1-5 with a 6.89 ERA for the Angels, who fell out of contention this month and began dumping salaries. Moore and López will be added to a Guardians bullpen that’s been leaned on heavily of late.

Reds: The Reds claimed OFs Hunter Renfroe and Harrison Bader off waivers in an effort to boosts their playoff push. Renfroe was claimed from the Angels and Bader from the Yankees. The 31-year-old Renfroe hit .242 with 19 HRs and 56 RBIs in his first season with the Angels, who acquired him from the Brewers in November. Renfroe has 176 HRs in eight major league seasons, hitting .240 with 450 RBIs. A Gold Glove winner with the Cardinaks in 2021, Bader hit .240 with seven HRs, 37 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts over 84 games with the Yankees this season. Bader strained his left oblique in spring training and didn’t make his season debut until May 2. He was sidelined between May 29 and June 20 with a strained right hamstring.
