Three players placed on IR

QB Johnson, 2 others return

The Ravens had their final practice of the preseason Wednesday, and a day later they finalized their roster with a series of moves ahead of their Week 1 matchup with the visiting Houston Texans.

Quarterback Josh Johnson, cornerback Kevon Seymour and defensive end Brent Urban were re-signed to the active roster Thursday, two days after being cut as Baltimore trimmed its roster to 53 players. The moves were expected and made possible with rookie running back Keaton Mitchell (shoulder), cornerback Damarion “Pepe” Williams (ankle) and rookie outside linebacker Malik Hamm being placed on injured reserve, meaning they’ll miss at least the first four games.

Nose tackle Bravvion Roy, a sixth-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2020, also signed with the Ravens, filling the final spot on the practice squad.

Among the moves, Johnson’s addition was the most intriguing. The Ravens now have four quarterbacks with Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown, who is on the practice squad.

But it was also not a surprise.

After Johnson struggled in the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, the 37-year-old put up solid performances in the final two games against the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished the preseason 24 of 33 for 285 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.

Who backs up Jackson in Week 1, however, remains to be seen.

Elsewhere, a handful of players the Ravens cut earlier this week signed with other teams: offensive linemen Jaylon Thomas (New York Giants) and David Sharpe (Panthers); linebacker Kristian Welch (Green Bay Packers) and defensive tackle Angelo Blackson (Jacksonville Jaguars). Rookie cornerback Kyu Kelly, whom Baltimore drafted in the fifth round, was also claimed by the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday after being cut.
