Alsobrooks’ successor backs Trone for Senate

U.S. Senate hopeful Angela Alsobrooks’ successor as Prince George’s County’s top prosecutor has endorsed her opponent, U.S. Rep. David Trone, as the congressman leads with about a month remaining before the Democratic primary.

Aisha Braveboy took over as state’s attorney in 2019 after Alsobrooks was elected county executive, and she would be among the officials in consideration for Alsobrooks’ current job if her Senate campaign is successful.

In a statement released by Trone’s campaign, Braveboy said “David has fought tirelessly to give prosecutors like me and communities like mine the tools that they need to ensure no one gets left out or left behind.”

Alsobrooks spent two four-year terms as the county’s elected state’s attorney and has highlighted her work in that role during the campaign.

One of her ads features Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, who endorsed her, saying crime rates decreased while she served in the position, as well as two women speaking about her work to prosecute the cases in their sons’ killings.

Though Alsobrooks has racked up endorsements from most of Maryland’s prominent Democrats, including Gov. Wes Moore and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Trone has boasted several endorsements from her home county. Longtime legislators like state Sen. Joanne Benson and Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk are among that list. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, who previously represented parts of Prince George’s County in the U.S. House, also endorsed Trone last week and quickly appeared in an ad for him.

Trone, a three-term congressman from Montgomery County, led Alsobrooks 48% to 29% in a poll conducted April 7-10 for The Baltimore Sun, FOX45 and the University of Baltimore. The wealthy co-founder of Total Wine & More, he’s spent more than $40 million of his own money on the race. Alsobrooks has spent about a tenth of that amount.

The candidates are vying to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin. Former Gov. Larry Hogan is competing in the Republican primary and is the likely nominee for November election.

Primary day is May 14, though mail-in voting has already begun and early in-person voting is scheduled for May 2 through May 9.
