Blue edges White in Hornet Bowl

- By Connor Goodson

BRYANT – The Bryant Blue Hornets defeated the Bryant White Hornets 14-12, in a thrilling 2020 Hornet Bowl, to remain perfect on the season. Bryant Blue is 5-0 on the season, while Bryant White falls to 2-2 overall.

The low-scoring, defensive battle would begin with both teams getting a chance to have one possession each to start. Then, it would be Bryant White who would strike first. Myron Thrash would connect with Tristan Knox on a 68-yard touchdown pass, putting Bryant White up 6-0 with 2:25 left in the quarter.

It would be almost a full quarter before either team would score again. Each team had long drives that were thwarted by multiple penalties. On Bryant White’s third drive of the game, Daniel Anderson’s pass would be intercepted by Bryant Blue’s Carter Ratliff, who returned it all the way to the 5-yard line. It would be Jaysean Robinson who would punch it in on the next play. Then, Jordan Walker would connect with Ryan Reynolds for the 2-point conversion.

Bryant White would turn it over on downs their next possession, giving Bryant Blue another chance to score before halftime. The drive would start with a 40-yard Robinson rush, but the momentum would come to a stop after a holding penalty. Bryant Blue would be behind the chains and would have to settle for an 8-6 halftime lead.

Coming out of halftime, neither team could get anything going offensively. It would be a defensive slugfest, marred by penalties and turnovers. Jordan Walker would fumble on one possession and then have a pass picked off by Tristan Knox the next. The pick would come after Bryant Blue had three false-start penalties on one drive.

Bryant White would take full advantage of the mistake, with Anderson scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run, making it 12-8 Bryant White with 3:42 left in the game.

Bryant Blue would get the ball back and start on their own 40-yard line. Walker

would find J.T. Allen on a 35-yard pass completion. Then, after marching down to the Bryant White 5-yard line, Walker would score on a 5-yard quarterback keeper to make it 14-12 with 1:46 left.

Bryant White would have one last chance, but backto-back penalties would put them too far behind the chains for them to overcome. Bryant Blue’s defense would hold on, giving them the win.

Bryant White will next welcome Little Rock Horace Mann next Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Then, Bryant Blue will play El Dorado on Thursday. Kickoff is also set for 5:30 p.m.
