Democratic Headquarters wins window contest
This year’s Downtown Benton window decorating contest was won by the Whoville-themed Democratic Party of Saline County.
“We went through a long, crazy year,” said Party Chair Dustin Parson on why they chose the whimsical theme for the display.
He said Whoville, from the books by Dr. Seuss, makes people think of joy. The Whos went through a hard time with the Grinch, but it ended happy. With these dark times, Parsons said it is important to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
He added that the party took part in the competition to have fun.
The effort was led by Second Vice Chair Pat Edwards.
“We put a lot of work into that window,” Edwards said.
Due to the pandemic, they worked in shifts to get it done to keep participants separated.
She thanked Dianne Roberts for the idea.
Edwards is grateful for the people of Saline County voting for their window and the participants that made it happen.
The contest was put on by the city of Benton. The Saline Courier hosted the voting online.
There were 148 people who took part. Voters could cast one voter per day for a total of 278 votes.
The headquarters received 146 votes.
Just Ice Cream took second place with 59 votes. Broox Beauty Bar was third with 37 votes.
Jennifer Donnor, board president of the Downtown Business Owners Association, said decorating the windows helps everyone get into the spirit of Christmas, especially this year.
She said people come from all over to see the Saline County Courthouse and Downtown Benton at Christmas time.
The Democratic Party is pleased it won the contest.
“We are ecstatic,” Parsons added.
