Best Friends

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Supermom!

SOME PUPPY MOMS go above and beyond. And Marsi has certainly earned the title of Supermom here at Dogtown. She came to the Sanctuary nursing six puppies of her own. But before she moved on from motherhood, she happily took on even more.

Marsi gave her all to her puppies, and it showed. They were well-fed and healthy, and she kept trying to nurse and care for them even after they were eating on their own and becoming more independent. It was as if she still needed them to need her.

Meanwhile, another puppy mama was struggling to nurse a litter of eight. This poor mother had arrived at Best Friends extremely malnourished. She needed a break from the demands of motherhood to get healthy again, but her puppies still needed a mom. Dogtown caregivers had an idea: Why not introduce Marsi to these puppies to see if she would like to nurse them?

There was no guarantee that Marsi would accept the other dog’s puppies. If she did, though, it would mean two happier moms and eight extremely thankful puppies. Caregivers brought the puppies over to Marsi one at a time and watched to see what she would do. Things went better than expected. Marsi immediately started nuzzling and nursing the pups. Sure enough, she continued to care for them as her very own for the next several weeks.

When they, too, were weaned and ready to move on to puppy preschool, Marsi finally seemed satisfied with a job well done. It was time for her to move on to the next chapter of her life and a home of her own. But she’ll always be remembered as one of the best puppy moms Dogtown has ever had.
