Big Spring Swim Team dominates the pool at Dual Meet against Lubbock Estacado & Lubbock Monterey

The Big Spring Swim Team participat­ed in their fifth meet of the season on Thursday afternoon at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center in Lubbock. The schools that participat­ed were Big Spring, Lubbock Estacado, and Lubbock Monterey. The Steers dominated the pool as a team with both the boys and the girls finishing first against both schools, which meant a victory in the combined category as well. The next time that this group will enter the pool will be next Thursday, Nov. 12, back at Pete Ragus for a Double Dual against Lubbock High and Lubbock Coronado.

Big Spring's boys defeated Lubbock Estacado (72.00-55.00) and Lubbock Monterey (92.00-13.00) for an overall great meet. The girls also won their matchup against Lubbock Estacado by shutting completely shutting out the competitio­n (91.00-0.00) and also crushed Lubbock Monterey (89.00-13.00). In the combined scores, Big Spring defeated Lubbock Estacado (163.00-55.00) and Lubbock Monterey (181.00-26.00).

Here are the results for Big Spring's swimmers from the Double Dual this Thursday at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center:

In the Girls' 200-yard medley relay, the quartet of sophomore Malaki Vaughn, freshman Arely CruzGarcia, sophomore Naomi Reyes, and sophomore Jayden Overton finished in first-place with a total

time of 2:32.27.

In the Boys' 200-yard medley relay, the group of freshman Christian Pantoja-strickland, sophomore David Summers, senior Manuel Castillo, and sophomore Ismael Castillo finished in first-place with a total time of 2:16.50.

In the Girls' 200-yard Freestyle, freshman Katherine Greene finished in second-place (2:51.03). Big Spring's Jaylon Phillips also finished in secondplac­e in the Boys' 200-yard Freestyle (2:43.78).

Sophomore David Summers was victorious in the Boys' 200 Yard IM (2:57.03), while no Lady Steer participat­ed in that event.

Three Lady Steer sophomores finished in the top three spots for the Girls' 50-Yard Freestyle. Naomi Reyes finished in second-place (29.76), and Sapphire Martinez took home third-place (37.12).

In the Boys' 50-Yard Freestyle, Manuel Castillo was the top performer for the Steers and won the race with a final time of 25.96 seconds. Sophomore Ismael Castillo finished fourth (30.70) and freshman Matthew Nieves finished sixth (37.97).

Freshman Katherine Greene took home the gold in the Girls' 100 Yard Butterfly (1:35.37) and was the only Lady Steer to place in that event.

The same goes for senior Manuel Castillo, who also finished in first-place (1:03.74) in the Boys' 100 Yard Butterfly.

Freshman Arely Cruz-garcia was the top finisher for Big Spring in the Girls' 100-Yard Freestyle when she raced her way to a first-pace finish (1:08.70). Sophomore swimmer Jayda Overton (1:18.92) finished in second-place and sophomore Brooklynne Heffle finished third (1:22.48).

Freshman Ethan Barker finished third in the Boys' 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:24.86.

Jayda Overton placed first (8:35.51) in the Girls' 500-Yard Freestlye. Morgan Griffith finished in third on the Boys' side of the same event with a time of 7:28.88.

The group of Naomi Reyes, Malaki Vaughn, Brooklynne Heffle, and Arely Cruz-garcia took home first-place in the Girls' 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with a total time of 2:07.78.

Big Spring also finished second in the Boys' 200Yard Freestyle Relay with the grouping of David Summers, Manuel Castillo, Morgan Griffith, and a fourth swimmer (1:58.44).

Cruz-garcia finished in first-place in the Girls' 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:20.33. Vaughn finished directly behind her in second-place (1:22.05) and Heffle was in third (1:39.37). Martinez also placed in the race when she finished fifth (1:48.27).

On the boys' side, Jaylon Phillips placed fourth (1:38.69) while Ethan Barker finished in fifth (1:40.10).

Naomi Reyes finished in first-place and was the only Lady Steer to place in the Girls' 100-Yard Breaststro­ke (1:28.90). On the Boys' side, Ismael Castillo (2nd, 1:30.78), Summers (3rd, 1:31.72), Griffith (1:32.56), and Nieves (5th, 1:47.19) all placed in the Top 5.

Lastly, the grouping of Overton, Greene, Martinez, and Heffle finished in first-place in the Girls' 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (5:39.66). On the boys' side, the quartet of Ismael Castillo, Barker, Phillips, and Griffith finished in second-place (5:25.28).

mers. Head Coach Randall Shaw has been satisfied with the effort that his team is putting together in the pool and they appear to be improving at each meet they participat­e in.

The Steer and Lady Steer swimmers will be taking the pool again next week at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center and will be looking for another pair of victories over some larger Lubbock schools.

Big Spring will have two more meets this month and four total before a month-long break from December to January. If you have a chance, go out and support the Big Spring swim team in the pool at one of their upcoming meets.
