Check this out, at the library this week

- By SANDRA VERDIN

We continue to encourage patrons to take advantage of our remote services. We also want to remind patrons to make sure to wear a mask throughout their visit to the library including inside the computer lab. One of the services we are still offering is curbside pickup. Patrons can reserve books online from the catalog page by logging into their account, and following the catalog link from our homepage. Patrons can also call the library during business hours to place an item on reserve. It may take up to 24 hours for reserve items to be ready. Once the items are ready, patrons will get a call from the Circulation Desk notifying them that items are ready. When items are ready, patrons may wait in their car for pick-up or come into the library to check out items at the circulation desk.

This week's books are all non-fiction titles. “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play” (796.32 BRY K) by Kobe Bryant takes readers on a journey to the core of the legendary mindset that made a basketball superstar Kobe Bryant one of the greatest to ever play the game. In his own works, Bryant details his vast understanding of the sport. He documents who he learned from, how he played through pain, and why he refused to accept losing as an option. He shares his motivation to never stop learning and to make himself-and his teammates-better every single day. Page by page, play by play, Bryant breaks down specific match-ups from throughout his career from Michael Jordan to Lebron James. It's all accompanied by the stunning photography of Andrew D Bernstein, the NBA'S Hall of Fame photographer who captured Bryant's very first photo as Laker in 1996, his very last in 2016, and many thousands in between. The Mamba Mentality beautifully reveals the inner workings of one of the most intelligent, analytical and creative athletes of our time.

Celebrating the grandeur and variety of the American landscape, “America's Best Day Hikes” (796.51 DEL D) by Derek Dellinger takes you on a journey across the country's most scenic hiking destinations. The result is a guide both practical and aspirational, whether you're setting out to explore a new region for the first time, planning your own road trip across several states, or even compiling a lifetime's worth of bucket list destinations. “Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs” (614.4 OST M) by Michael T. Osterholm & Mark Olshaker is high scientific drama, a chronicle of medical mystery and discovery, a reality check, and a practical plan of action. Unlike natural disasters, whose destruction is concentrated in a limited area over a period of days, and illnesses, which have devastating effects but are limited to individuals and their families, infectious disease has the terrifying power to disrupt everyday life on a global scale, overwhelming public and private resources and bringing trade and transportation to a grinding halt. In today's world, it's easier than ever to move people, animals, and materials around the planet, but the same advances that make modern infrastructure so efficient have made epidemics and even pandemics nearly inevitable. And as outbreaks of COVID-19, Ebola, MERS, and Zika have demonstrated, we are woefully underprepared to deal with the fallout. So, what can and must we do in order to protect ourselves from mankind's deadliest enemy? Drawing on the latest medical science, case studies, policy research, and hard-earned epidemiological lessons, Deadliest Enemy explores the resources and programs we need to develop if we are to keep ourselves safe from infectious disease. The authors show how we could wake up to a reality in which many antibiotics no longer cure, bioterror is a certainty, and the threat of a disastrous influenza or coronavirus pandemic looms ever larger. Only by understanding the challenges we face can we prevent the unthinkable from becoming the inevitable.
