Forsan continues perfect season move to 7-0, The Coahoma Bulldogs fall to Stanton

- By DUSTIN POPE

It was another fun-filled night of football for our local teams. Both the Forsan Buffaloes and the Coahoma Bulldogs were on the road this Friday night. Coahoma took a trip down to Stanton to tangle with the Stanton Buffaloes in a district matchup. Forsan took a little longer trip as they went to Anson to battle the Anson Tigers, which was also a district game. Coahoma was looking for their first district win of the season, but they came up short against the Stanton Buffaloes losing 30 to 17. The loss now drops the Bulldogs to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in the district. On the flip slide, the Forsan Buffaloes were looking to stay perfect, and that is exactly what they did. Behind a huge second-half effort, the Buffs ended up rolling over the Tiger by a final score of 50-27. The win now puts the Buffaloes at a perfect 7-0, and 2-0 in District.

Let's start with the Forsan game. The Buffs came into this game with a 6-0 record for the first time since 1998. This was a close game in the first half of play, as the Anson Tigers proved to be a solid football team. Forsan scored first on the night when running back Chris Mendez busted loose on a pleasant run that put the Buffs up 7-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter. Anson answered back when they connected on a very log touchdown pass, tying the game up at 7-7. That is how the first quarter of play ended, tied up at seven apiece.

The second quarter began with the Tigers striking first. They were able to move the ball on the ground well and scored with 10:58 left in the second, giving them a 14-7 lead over the Buffs. Anson was not done, as they would score again to go up 21-7 over Forsan. The Buffaloes are not used to trailing, so they got right to work. Quarterback Major Stockton made a huge run to get the buffaloes back in this game, making it a 14-21 lead for the hometown Tigers. Now, this was only a seven-point game, and the Buffs had some good momentum rolling. With time running out in the first half, Forsan punched the ball in the end zone to make this a 20-21 game. Forsan then went for the two-point conversion and it was good giving Forsan a 22-21 lead going into halftime.

This was a closer game than I had expected as the second half of play began. Anson would get the ball at the half, and they drove right down the field on the Buffaloes' defense. The Tigers score and take the lead back. 27 to 22. That would be the last time that the Buffaloes let the Tigers even get close to scoring, as the Forsan Buffaloes played like the team we have seen all season long. Forsan started the scoring with a nice 47-yard touchdown. The score gave Forsan the lead back once again 28/27. Forsan would then strike once again as they dominated the game. Now leading the game 36-27, the better team was pulling away. After a horrible kickoff return from the Tigers that forced them to start at their nine-yard line, the Forsan defense made a play as they picked off the Anson quarterback and ran it in for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 44-27. What was a one-point game when halftime started was now a 17-point lead by the Forsan Buffaloes at the end of the third quarter.

Now, with a nice lead, the Buffs took their foot off the throttle and just ran out the clock and showed mercy to the Tigers. Forsan did score once more ensuring the win as they now had a lead of 50-27.

So, what started as a very close game ended up as a huge blowout win by the Forsan Buffaloes. The win pushed them to a perfect 7-0 in the year and now 2-0 in district play. Once again, this game showed exactly what the Buffs are made of. They played a so-so first half than in the second half they showed their dominance and why they are one of the best teams in the state in 2A. I have said it before, and I will say it again. What we are watching may be history. This team is so good and complete that I truly believe that they can hang with anybody on any given night. It was a great win by a great team, and they deserve that 7-0 record.

The Coahoma Bulldogs traveled to Stanton to take on the Bulldogs. Both teams came into this game with a 2-3 record, and both were 0-1 in district play. With both teams gunning for their first district wins, it set the stage for a great football game. The Coahoma Bulldogs were able to take the early lead against the Buffaloes as after the first quarter of play they had a 10-0 lead. Stanton then battled back in the second quarter tying this game up at 1010 at halftime. In the second half, the Stanton Buffaloes pulled away from Coahoma and sealed the victory with a 30-17 win. The loss for Coahoma now makes them 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in the district. This will make it an uphill battle for the Bulldogs going forward this season. This team still has time to turn this season around and they can very well do that. Coahoma is full of talent on both sides of the ball. It just hasn't quite worked out just yet.

This was another good night for the Forsan Buffaloes as they continue to have a historic season. As far as the Coahoma Bulldogs, this is another setback, but the season is not over by any means. They have all the pieces in place to make a strong run and finish this season off hot.
