Coahoma Bulldogs drop game to Stanton Buffaloes

- By Steve Belvin Special to the Herald

STANTON - Miguel Moreno was a one man wrecking crew against the Coahoma Bulldogs Friday night. The senior running back/linebacker did just about everything manageable in leading the underdog Stanton Buffaloes to a 30-17 win over the Coahoma Bulldogs.

It was a crucial District 4-3A game for both teams because both lost their district openers last week. On this night however the Buffaloes rose to the challenge, thanks to a superb performance by Moreno. He made tackle after tackle from his linebacker position, not to mention intercepting a pass late in the game to stifle a Coahoma scoring threat. On special teams he caused a blocked punt when he pushed the Coahoma up back into his punter and Stanton recovered at the Coahoma two-yard line, resulting in Stanton touchdown on the next play.

Moreno iced the game by throwing a 23-yard halfback pass to Alex Flores for a touchdown with 3:25 left in the game. Throw in a made 32-yard field goal that tied the game at 10-10 at the half. But wait, there's more. He also led all Stanton rushers with 141 yards on 18 carries.

The Bulldogs didn't do to much to help themselves either. They hurt themselves with three turnovers plus the blocked punt. The offense just never seemed to find its groove. Coahoma ran the ball fairly well, rushing for more than 300 yards, but several drives were stopped by untimely penalties.

As usual Brysen Kerby led Bulldog rushers with 143 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Coahoma signal caller Billy Bailey also went over the 100 yard mark, rushing for 107 yards on eight carries, including a 58-yard scoring run in the third period. Coahoma's other score came on a 25-yard field goal by Reagan Chapman, his second in two weeks.

Ky Kemper picked off a Stanton pass on the opening possession of the game, returning it 30 yards, setting up Coahoma's first score of the game. Coahoma, which is on a three-game skid, falls to 0-2 in league play and 2-5 overall. The Bulldogs will host Reagan County Friday at 7:30. The Buffaloes, 1-1 and 3-4 will travel to Idalou Friday.
