This week's Big Spring Herald Business of the Week is Howard County Recycling. Owners of the business provided answers to the following questions:

• Who are the business owners? Chris Mason and Tommy Martinez

• What services does the business provide? Residentia­l and business curbside collection of recyclable materials: cardboard, paper, type 1 and 2 plastic, aluminum and tin cans. Blue 95-gallon rollout trash bins are provided. Trailers are also available for customers with large quantities of recyclable materials. Please call for more informatio­n: 432270-2708.

• When did the business open? August 2018.

• Where is the business located? 1305 ½ Scurry, Big Spring, Texas, 79720 – adjoined to Big Spring Health Food Store.

• Why did you choose to go into this area of business? There is a definite need for this service in Howard County. Recycling is important to: prevent pollution by decreasing the need for new raw material collection, conserve energy and natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the amount of waste deposited in local landfills; and, ultimately, save money and improve economic security by increasing the longevity of products. It is a business we feel good about.

• What sets Howard County Recycling apart from other businesses? There is a lack of recycling options in Howard County. Our goal is to divert large quantities of recyclable waste from our local landfill. • Who can benefit from services provided by Howard County Recycling? Initially, it benefits local citizens and businesses of Howard County; but ultimately, these services benefit the entire planet. Every little bit helps in keeping our planet healthy.

• What are the business' goals for the upcoming year? Our main goal is to continue to spread awareness pertaining to the importance of recycling and decreasing the amount of unnecessar­y waste that infiltrate­s our landfill.

• How has the pandemic impacted Howard County

Recycling? We have increased our safety protocol for the hygienic handling of waste materials.

• What is the biggest opportunit­y Howard County Recycling has had since the business opened? Our biggest opportunit­ies have been the chance to speak in front of local organizati­ons and community leaders regarding the benefits of our services. We have been honored to provide services for local businesses and the school district.

• What would you say to others looking to start a business? Look for something that's needed in your community and make sure you have the passion to provide quality service.

• What else would you like the community to know? In the month of September, we diverted over 10 TONS of cardboard from our local landfill. WOW! Help us continue to make a positive change in our community!
