Crushing Cancer...

One outfit at a time

The morning was almost perfect and yet bittersweet. Members of Cancer Crushers Relay For Life team welcomed guests to the annual Fashion Show at The Courtyard. The annual event has served as a kick off for Relay For Life season, but this year, while the crowd was abundant, there were some vacant seats.

“This past year we had to say goodbye to some very important people – Beverly Grant, Vicky Stewart and Howard Stewart – not only were they special people in our lives, but they were great contributors and supports for Relay,” Sally Grant, one of the event organizers, said.

The fashion show has been taking place for the past few years, and this year was no disappointment. There were more than 30 models highlighting outfits provided by several local boutiques. This was the first year that men’s fashion was included through the addition of DL Clothing, Big Spring’s only men’s clothing store.

Models ranged from seven months old to adult, and all presented some fun spring and summer outfits to be added to the wardrobe.

“The Fashion Show was one of Beverly’s favorite events. We are thankful to all of those who turned out and helped make this year a success,” Grant said. “We had a true representation of a community coming together through the donations and monies raised at the event.”

During the event there was more than $800 raised to start off Relay season. Those attending enjoyed a brunch meal. A special guest speaker and cancer survivor, Serenity, shared her story. For the past several years Serenity and her family have been fighting cancer, and during the event they reported that she is cancer free.

“We want to continue Beverly Grant’s passion and continue to let people know about Relay For Life,” she said.

Those who would like to know more about Relay for Life in Howard County may reach out to any member of the Cancer Crusher team or Julie Alvarez. For the past couple of years, Howard County has been one of the largest fundraising efforts during campaign season.

“The fight against cancer is something that we all need to take part in. When we stop and think about it, we all have been impacted by cancer in our lives. Maybe not directly, but we know a family member, friend or co-worker who has traveled this journey,” Grant said. “Cancer is a word that nobody should have to hear, and with a unified effort and continued research, we are striving for the day that cancer no longer exists.”
